Are You Jealous?

Aaron convinced me that I'd be missing out if I didn't go to the party with him. Frankly, I didn't feel comfortable with him being at a party with Deja.

He drove us to a house, and I saw Cameron's car parked in the driveway along with Darnel's. So, Kendra was there too. How had I not heard about this party before?

"You look sexy," Aaron complimented once we were both out of his car.

"I'm not really dressed for a party."

I was only dressed in jeans and a plain blouse. There was nothing sexy about that, but I made no comment about my appearance.

We walked right into the house and were immediately bombarded with loud music and talking.

Aaron slid his arm around my waist as we walked further into the house. I saw Deja being her usual life of the party self. She was dancing with Kendra in the middle of the kitchen.

When they saw me they both screamed.

"Kyra! I can't believe you're here!" Deja yelled.

"Hey, girl," Kendra greeted.

"What the hell were you two doing?" Aaron asked.

Deja rolled her eyes. "What the hell did it look like we were doing? We were dancing."

Aaron feigned a look of shock. "Dancing? I thought you were having some sort of medical problem."

"Very funny," Deja replied and shooed him away. "Go play with your friends. We'll take care of Kyra."

Aaron looked down at me hesitantly, but I nodded at him, and he let me go. "I won't be far if you need me." He kissed the side of my head and went to go find his friends.

"Girl, you two are just too cute," Kendra said.

I leaned against the counter. "Thanks."

"Even though I'm not his biggest fan, I think you guys are cute too."

"Why can't you stand him?"

She shrugged. "We didn't end things on good terms. But I don't want to talk about that."

"So, whose party is this?"

Kendra poured a drink into a red solo cup and offered it to me. "Orion's."

I took the cup, but I wasn't interested in drinking it. "Orion, the piano player?" He'd been really friendly and seemed like a nice guy.

Deja nodded. "He throws parties for no reason."

"Kyra, spill the tea. Have you and Aaron..."

I stuck my finger into my cup and distractedly swirled it around. "Every time we try, we never get past kissing. There's always some sort of interruption."

"It'll happen when it's time," Deja assured me. "You don't have to rush. Besides, you barely got to know him."

"And he didn't even take you on a proper date yet," Kendra added.

They were right. We didn't have to rush. I still needed to get to know him, and he needed to get to know me. So, it was probably best to take it slow.

"You guys are probably right," I muttered.

I watched Aaron and Deja play pool in the crowded basement of Orion's house. I'd turned down Aaron's offer to play, and Deja challenged him for money.

As I saw them bicker and joke around, I started to regret my decision. They were having fun, and I was stuck on the sidelines watching them like a damn movie.

"You know, watching them will only make your head hurt," I heard a voice say.

I turned, reluctant to take my eyes off of Aaron and Deja, and saw Cameron by my side. He was eyeing them too, but he didn't look jealous or angry at all. In fact, he seemed to be amused.

"Are you saying it doesn't bother you?"

He lifted his shoulder then let it fall. "It used to. Then I realized that they genuinely don't care for each other in that way."

I folded my arms. "Well, it bothers me."

While Deja was trying to make her shot, Aaron poked her in her side making her jump and miss. She whacked him on the arm and stomped over to where Cameron and I stood.

"He's cheating," she huffed. "Such an ass."

Aaron looked unapologetic as he laughed. "I'm sorry."

Cameron pulled her to him by her waist and kissed her forehead. "Tag me in."

She turned back to Aaron and said, "Cameron's playing for me."

"Ready to be schooled?" Cameron asked Aaron as he made his way over to the pool table and took Deja's shot like a pro.

"You two seemed a little close."

Deja scoffed. "We are not close," she argued.

"Well, it seemed like it to me," I snapped.

She looked at me like I had two heads. "I just got married, Kyra. Aaron is Cameron's best friend. There is nothing going on there."

I don't know what came over me, but I wanted to slap her.

"I know but—"

She sounded hurt when she asked, "Do you seriously think I'd do that to you?"

I should have never come to the party. I should've stayed at home watching tv in bed while I ate dinner. It would've been better than sitting in a corner by myself watching Aaron and Cameron play pool.

Walking away from Deja, before I actually put my hands on her, I hurried up the stairs and found my way outside.

I pulled out my phone and started to call an Uber when I heard Aaron's voice behind me.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Getting an Uber."

He grabbed my arm, forcing me to whirl around, and boy was he angry. I didn't know why though. He could go back inside and party with his friends all night long if he wanted to. I had no claim on him, and he had no claim to me either.

I was falling so fast that I forgot about protecting myself. I'd been wrong about Aaron. He didn't give a shit about me. And coming to the party only proved that.

"What is your problem?" he demanded.

"You are my problem," I snapped.

Yanking my arm from his grip, I started to open the Uber app when he snatched the phone from my hands and shoved it into his pocket.

"What happened back there? We were all having a good time," he said.

God, he truly believed that I'd been having a good time. He really thought I enjoyed the show he was putting on with Deja.

"If you think that, you're crazy," I said looking down and brushing an imaginary piece of dust off my pants.

"Look at me, Kyra."

I complied and saw that he was seriously pissed but I didn't have the strength to care. "What?"

"Tell me what's going on? Don't do what you did the last time, Kyra. Talk to me."

I held out my hand. "Take me home or give me my phone back."

"You know what? Fine." He roughly pulled out my phone and slammed it into my hand. "Go."
