What are isotopes?
Isotopes are the same element because they have the same proton number. Their atomic mass is different because they have different numbers of neutrons
Atomic mass = number of protons + number of neutrons
Calculating the relative atomic mass.
Both isotopes of chlorine are:
75% is chlorine 35 and 25% is chlorine 37
Step 1. The masses and abundances of the isotopes are 75% of Cl with a mass Of 35 and 25% Cl with a mass of 37
Step 2. In 100 atoms, 75 will have a mass of 35 and 25 will have a mass of 37
Step 3. Mass of 100 atoms (75 x 35) + (25 x 37) = 3550
Step 4. Mean mass = 3550/100 = 35.5
