Ions are electrically-charged particles formed when atoms lose or gain electrons.
This loss or gain of electrons leaves the outer shell of electrons full, so that the electronic structure is like a noble gas (such as a helium, neon or argon).
• Metal atoms lose the electron(s) in their outer shell and become positively-charged ions.
• Non-metal atoms gain an electron(s) from another atom to become negatively-charged ions.
Positive ions are called Cations (way to remember cations are purrrsitive)
Negative ions are called Anions (way to remember anions are onions make you cry)
