Avogadro and his constant
    • Avogadro was an Italian scientist.
    • He worked out that if you take 12g of Carbon it would have 602,000,000,000,000,000,000 this is 1 mole.

What is a mole?
    • The relative atomic mass of a substance - shown in grams is called one mole of that substance.

    • Carbon has a relative atomic mass of 12.
    • 12 grams of Carbon is one mole of Carbon.
    • 12 g of Carbon contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms

    • If you divide the mass by the atomic mass you get the number of moles.
