"I ran all night and day. I couldn't get away..."

Chapter two

T R A U M A

As the light shone on her closed eyelids she felt herself stirring and her mind buzzing. She just wanted to sleep a little longer...

And then she drifted off to sleep as fast as she had awakened. She would sadly not sleep as peacefully as she had until now though.

This time she dreamt.

She dreamt of her life in the Tribe and later the at the Camp. She dreamt of hundreds of waterbending girls and boys under a starry night sky. She dreamt of her parents; both the first happy memories of them and the gradually darker and sadder memories as she grew older and more dangerous. She dreamt of the lonely nights at the Camp, that felt as though they never ended but also of the warm, fuzzy nights of endless talking with her roommates. She dreamt of hard work, mean teachers and masters but also the happiness of bending the water and ice to her will.

She dreamt of all these things, and as she fell deeper and deeper into the memories of her brain, she started getting disturbing images. First came images of her friends crying, and of an episode when she as a kid fell and broke her upper arm. The images got gradually heavier and darker and turned into horrifying scenes of her teachers dying, and her friends getting tortured. All of these images were fictional, and nothing but imagination gone in the wrong direction since she had never witnessed her friends being tortured, but she couldn't stop it nonetheless. The dream slowly went from a rather peaceful journey down memory lane, to a fictional horror movie where people she cared for got hurt and died.

In her dreams, the scenery changed constantly, but a situation that stood clear in her mind was a scene where she was walking across the grass field in the middle of the Camp at night when the first teacher she ever had slithered out of the shadows on her right, missing both of his arms and with his neck slit open. She looked at the man but kept pursuing the path in front of her. Next, One of her roommates came towards her, but she was missing her head so you could see where her spine had been chopped and blood was trailing down what was left of her neck.

Several other people, she knew appeared before her, injured - or what she would refer to as dead. Zombies, crossed her mind.

None of them seemed to have a reaction towards their own injuries and disabilities. They just stared at her without blinking and followed her closely with their intense gaze, (if their eyes were still in their head, and their head still on their body, that is) even after she had walked past them without uttering a word.

Then suddenly her parents stood before her, blocking the path she was clinging to. Her mother was covered in blood from head to toe and missing both arms. Her father was equally drenched in blood and missing a leg and an arm. They looked as if, they had been crushed. Almost as if they had felt the weight of their house on top of them when their roof crashed over their heads. She wanted to put distance between her and her parents. She didn't feel well under their paralyzing stare at all, and she really, really wanted to turn around and walk away but she couldn't move her legs. Or anything at all.

She stood still until her parents spoke in unison, as though they were a creepy couple of twins:

"Look at us.
You did this to us, daughter.
You were not strong enough.
You did not save us.
It is because of you everyone is dead.
You killed these people.
You killed us.
You are the reason we are here.
You are the reason we are dead."
