"How'd it come to this?"

Chapter one

S H O C K

"Stop screaming and kicking like that" he hissed, while struggling to keep the girl still. Well, it was understandable that she resisted, they all did. He was determined though, and her cooperation would make everything much easier. The little girl trashed in their grasp, and her tangled blond hair messed around her face, as she screamed yet again: "MOM! DADDY! NO!"

The two big, scary men kept pushing and pulling her. She had no control. Tears streamed down her face, as she felt hopeless, but nonetheless never stopped resisting. She knew what this meant; Where she was going. They were pushing her into a car to take her far, far away. When they attempted to get her inside the vehicle she managed to turn around still in their grasp, to look at her mommy and daddy. The two people in this world she loved the most, and they were now sending her away. They had given up on her. "NO! MOM! HELP ME! DAD!"

...

Her eyes shot open quick as lightning. She would have woken up, screaming, like she had done so many times before, if it wasn't because her throat was hurting so bad. Scratch that, everything was hurting. She attempted to lift her arm, and the muscle was practically dead.

Then a sudden bolt went through her, she was still on the battlefield. The clear, blue sky, ice around her and freezing temperature that bore into her bones confirmed it. Yes, she was indeed still home. She lifted her head slowly to see if she could make her body obey, and decided to give it a try.

But something was wrong. I don't know if you have ever been on a battlefield but it's certainly not supposed to be quiet. It was though. Quiet as a tomb.

The first thing she saw, as she lifted herself up, was the icy ground and silhouette of a majestic blue city in the background. A city made of ice. She was lying on the very platform where she had fallen in battle, under the attack. She knew she could see the entire city from this platform, she just had to get up.

She scraped to her feet and tripped over to the steps that led down to the town square, to see what was going on.

Her heart stopped at the sight.

Buildings had fallen and there were areas where the ice had cracked, and the city had fallen into the sea underneath. Black smoke was coming from everywhere, and some places were still on fire. The air escaped her lungs. Her legs were already shaking and suddenly she collapsed to the ground, upon seeing her fallen kingdom. Her home.

Immediately she bore her hands into the snow beneath her feet. She tugged at the force to read the area for life signals - she had to find out where people had gone. She searched the snow and ice beneath her city for the sound of footsteps, conversation, or a beating heart.

She searched for a long time.

Then she gave up.

And then she tried again because she refused to believe that she was all alone. That not a single inhabitant had survived the attack except her. She couldn't be the last member of the Northern Tribe. Or rather - what used to be the Northern Tribe.

...

An invisible string was pulling her through the streets of ice, and towards the place where she had spent most of her childhood before she was taken away.
