June sighed as she set her phone down, trying to permanently put away any thought that wasn't valuable at the moment she was currently trying to live.
"Hello, earth to June?" the man sitting across from her asked. June immediately sat up straighter and her attention was out all on him.
"Yes, sorry," she apologized, staring down at the menu in front of her. "Just coffee, please. Three sugars and two creams, and to go please," she handed the waitress the menu and then she left the table.
"Thank you for meeting me here today," he said.
"No big deal. I was in the neighborhood."
"It is a big deal. We haven't spoken in a long time."
June didn't know what to say.
"Yeah well, it's time to turn over a new leaf," she finally decided.
"Do you really mean that?" he asked, sincerely.
"Yeah, of course," she smiled weakly.
"We have a lot in common you know."
"Oh really? How?" June chuckled.
"June, I know how you feel. I've been in your predicament before."
"I'm a biracial and bisexual girl in love with the hottest actor in the movie industry — who turns out to be white. Try me."
"Well, I am not any of those things—"
June cut him off. "Which hardly makes us alike."
"I'm sensing you're not particularly fond of me right now," he sighed.
"Yeah, not your biggest fan," June sat back with her arms crossed.
"June, I know we've had our disagreements, but this is your future we're talking about. And your reputation," he tried to reason with the stubborn girl, but he picked the wrong day to try and move a mountain.
"My reputation? Please, we all know all you care about is getting good credit for treating June Martin with such respect and care," June spat, practically throwing her name. Her tone was starting to make people in the cafe look. "This is why you're not going to be my publicist anymore," she brought her voice back down with a sweet smile.
"What do you mean?" the man furrowed his eyebrows.
And with the sweetest smile, a girl could plaster on her face, June finally told him the two words she'd been dying to tell him ever since she'd realized one day she wasn't happy with how her image was portrayed in the business; and her publicist was the reason why.
"You're fired."
He sat there in silence for a while and June allowed him to soak it all in. She even gave her autograph to the waitress when she came by with her to go cup of coffee.
"Why now?" was all he could say.
June shrugged, pouring cream into her cup before closing the plastic lid on it. "It's time I take charge of my sad life."
Silence again.
"What did you mean when you said you've been in my predicament before?" June finally asked.
"I've also been in love with someone I couldn't have," he smiled weakly.
June shook her head, rising from the table with her cup of coffee in hand. She was so sick and tired of her love story being labeled a forbidden one, told the one man she loved more than anything was out of her reach. He wasn't.
"That's another thing we don't have in common. My person is someone I can have," June smiled happily. "Farewell, and best of luck in your career future. Happy New Year."
June watched his smile drop before she turned and walked out the door to the Los Angeles coffee shop.
