Chapter Fifteen: A Gift and a Curse
The moon hung high in the sky, illuminating the valley with its silver glow. There was no other source of light, save the stars that swam in its shadow. The temple and its residents were asleep.
He sat atop the tower, enjoying the serenity that he could not find at any other time of day. No one knew that he was back at the temple, yet few ever knew if he did not show himself in the open.
He was a creature of shadows, after all.
Life had become somewhat chaotic in the past few years. After the guild had finally started building up its ranks, things had become far different than what he expected them to be. Although he had known that his simple life was going to change, he had not expected the change that was still changing on even now-- but changing into what exactly, he did not know.
His peaceful thoughts were interrupted as a scream broke the silence, resounding in the valley. Female by origin, its message of danger was as clear as day. His immediate thought was that someone had broken in and was going for the kill.
In a flash he was in the dorm hall, ready to hunt down the source of the sound, yet it had stopped as abruptly as it had started. His only option was to reach out with his ticon to find anyone foreign or malicious. It did not find a single one.
The hallway filled with people aroused from their sleep as he realized that there was no enemy in the building. He hid among the crowd as a thunder of questions called out. Candles were lit to give faces to the voices. Anyone who was not awake before surely was now.
Starting at the window where he had entered the building, he made his way through the corridors, counting every head he passed. There was 249, not including himself or Nerok. With the two teams that were out on missions, it meant that someone was missing.
"Alright, settle down everyone!" Nerok called from a few turns over. His voice seemed to fall flat on the crowd as he came in sight of the guild master.
The locked eyes and he tapped his nose once to signal how many were gone. Nerok looked around first before looking back at him and nodding, telling him to go find them.
They seemed to be the same idea by the general confusion. The one missing was the one who screamed.
He set off without a word, slipping out and heading to the roof to see if she was wandering around outside. A flash of movement by the dining hall proved his theory to be accurate. More than that, he knew who it was and had an idea as to why she was hiding.
To be sure, he seeped his ticon towards her to connect them as if with a string. With a guard up, she would not be able to feel his aura, but hers was clear to him.
He was taken back when he felt it pour into him. Despite there being no visible danger, she still felt as though someone had a knife to her throat. There were layers of doubt entangled into it, twisting it into something that he was incapable of unraveling.
Her ticon was not reacting well to the mess.
From looking at her creep around in the shadows, he was not able to see the raging storm inside of her. She looked calm, moving with determination as if going on a path she had taken many times before. He decided to follow her and see what she did before possibly approaching her.
They headed for the grove, to the middle of the silent giants. Slowing down one of the ones near the center, she scaled the trunk with ease. She remained hidden in the crown for a few minutes, and he was about to climb up after her when she jumped down-- in a different outfit.
