"Oh gosh Kat, I'm not sure if I can do this. I mean... I don't think I'm good enough for this!"

I heard a scoff on the other end of the phone line.  "Are you kidding me? This is your thing, Kate! You've been riding for forever!" "Yes I know, but the best from the country will be there, as well as experts from out of country!" I argued.

Horse-back riding was always my favorite thing to do, and I had always excelled at it. Those horses are my life.

Last month, while at the barn, I noticed a flyer on the bulletin board. It read, "COUNTRY-WIDE HORSE SHOW. JULY 24TH, 2012. NORFOLK, VA. WORLDS EXPERTS WILL JUDGE. IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND, CHECK OUT NORFOLKCOUNTRY-WIDE.COM. ENTRANCE IN COMPETITION ONLY PERMITTED BY AUDITION."

At the time I believed I could do it. I had participated in other competitions, but they weren't as important as this one. Nevertheless, I signed up for the competition, auditioning three weeks later.

Just yesterday I got the call.

They wanted me to participate! I was over-joyed, until the worry came in. This was big! I can't mess it up, people will be watching me, important people. These are people that could change my future.

"Well Kate," my best friend started. "I don't think you should give this opportunity up. Just perform like you know you can and do your best, and what will be, will be."

I thought it over. I knew she was right, I knew I couldn't give up this opportunity. I sighed and agreed, "Kat, you're right. I'm doing this. I have to do this." "That's the spirit! Good luck, I'll be there next week to support you! See you then."

"Ya." I answered, zoning out as I hung up the phone.

Niall's POV

"There is nothing to do in this town! What are we supposed to do in Virginia while we have a week off?" Louis complained. "I'm sure the scenery is beautiful." suggested Liam, ever the mature one.

I sighed and stood up. If these boys weren't going to find something to do, I would. "I'm going out to find something exciting... and food."

With that I closed myself off from the four boys who had become my brothers.

I wandered for an hour before coming upon a large neon sign. It read, "NORFOLK COUNTRY-WIDE HORSE SHOW AT HOLMES ARENA NEXT LEFT." "Do I have anything better to do?" I muttered, walking towards the arena.

The walking was easy. The streets may have been crowded with cars, but the sidewalks were barren.

I soon arrived at the large riding arena, baffled by the amount of people there. 'This must be quite an important event.' I thought to myself. They were selling the last of the tickets at the door, at an atrocious price I must say, but I bought one anyway.

Arena = sport = sport food!

I quickly glanced at the paper ticket in my hand, locating where I was supposed to sit. Of course though, with my luck, as soon as I sat down, the contest began. Looks like I'll have to take a rain-check on the food.

Kate's POV

"Hello everybody, welcome to Norfolk's Annual Country-wide Horse Show. All contestants should be preparing to compete. Let me remind you, the winner will get $10,000 and a private riding session with Karen O'Connor. Now to kick things off, please give it up for our first contestant, James. Contestant Kate please be ready to compete."

I was ready. Here I was, dressed up, preparing to give it my all. In a few short moments, I would be out there, performing for the country. Possibly even performing for the world!

Who knows who's out there? Contestants and judges alike, they're all amazing at this. Can I measure up? I peeked out at the boy performing now. He was flawless. Every jump, perfect. He seemed to have total control.

Before I knew it, my name was called, a couple of officials set me up, and I was off.

Niall's POV

I was mesmerized. This girl was great! She seemed to know exactly what she was doing. It was amazing to watch. I sat there, my eyes fixed on the girl and her horse. I could have watched her forever.

"Thank you Kate. Next up, Julia." the emcee announced, and as my mystery girl trotted out of the arena, my heart dropped slightly.

The show ended and everybody dispersed, but I waited. I knew the contestants would leave after everybody else. As the last person left the arena, I stood up and rushed out. I navigated the maze-like arena and quickly found the girl.

Her light brown hair was pulled back in a braid, with a few pieces framing her face. She wasn't very tall, 5'6, and seemed to be my age. She turned and I got a glimpse of her eyes, blue with a tinge of green.

I ran up to her without even thinking, "You know you did great today! I can't believe you didn't even place." "Ya, well, thanks for rubbing-" she started, but something cut her off. "Are you Niall Horan?" she asked, her eyes wide. "Oh haha, yes I am." I laughed nervously.

She smiled, probably sensing my unease. "Nice to meet you, not just a poster on the wall. I'm Kate."

I smiled back, knowing that even though she didn't win the competition, she had won my heart. This is the start of something big.
