"What happened?" I hadn't even opened my eyes yet. I wasn't sure I wanted to. The thoughts that ran through my head weren't even mine. I didn't know who's they were. There was a moment of silence after a pair of footsteps. Out of curiosity, I opened my eyes.

There was a boy beside me. His dark eyes were filled with a familiar pain and grief. He looked defeated. Not even a glimpse of hope was found in his stare.

"You hit your head. Thought you died but you just lost your memories." He barely even whispered.

He was lying. You didn't know this guy, but somehow you knew that everything he just tried telling you was a cover up for something he didn't want you to know. This wasn't going to be let go of so easily.

"You're lying to me. What happened." You asked again.

He didn't even blink. "You hit your head."

"How? Where did you even find me?" You started questioning. "Who are you?"

He seemed to break a little with your last question. You realized that whoever both of you were, you meant something to him at some point.

"Who am I?"

Your question seemed to spark interest to him. "You wouldn't wanna know."

"Why? Did I do something bad? Why can't I remember?" You pestered.

"I can't tell you." He choked on those words.

"Why? Please give me something to work with here! For gods sake, I wake up with no memory and this random boy next to me who clearly knows me but won't tell me a single thing about even myself. Put yourself in my shoes for a minute and see how that feels."

"I did. You wouldn't want to know. Not the old you anyway."

"Why?! Who was she? Did she hurt you? Did you take my memories because she did something to you? Why do I have to be punished for it? That was her fault!" You already were referring to whoever you were as a completely different person. She was anyway. If she caused this much pain, then you want nothing to do with her.

"She was perfect; a hero. There's no way to get your memories back, so there's no point in telling you anything. It would be better for you to just go and live a new life." He tried to weakly smile at you but failed. His eyes were already tearing up.

Something in you ached to stop his pain and tell him he'd be alright. Just to hold on to him tight and never let go, but you didn't know him.

"If she was so great, then why can't you just tell me her story? Tell me who she was and I can be like her again." You tried to tempt him.

"It's not that easy. Her life wasn't easy. You can go and live normally now." Every word he said was a knife in your heart. You didn't even remember why. You couldn't. That's what seemed to hurt him the most.

"I don't want to be normal though. I don't want to live thinking I was something great but now I'm ordinary." You started tearing up yourself. "I want to know what happened and why. Now."

He chuckled a little. "You're just as stubborn, you know."

You didn't have a comeback to that. His laugh sent a spark of joy through you. Like you won the lottery. His laugh was short but addictive. You wanted to hear it again and again till you died.

"You mock my pain." You joked.

He froze. Only for a moment, but it was enough.

"What?" You asked.
