Recap:

"It seems fate wishes this upon me." Her eyes lock onto his and he sees the misery in them, "This is my third curse and you are definitely not my soul mate."

  ----------------------------

"What are you saying?" he breathes in confusion.

"I never felt the pull during my second curse. It means I have no soul mate, so I am doomed to lose everything," she clarifies. "When my second curse ended, I fled here to avoid humans and try to find a way to avoid my evident destiny. The only reason I approached your ship was to see if any of your books had answers for me. But that is a useless hope now," she murmurs in a bitter tone.

He sits in silent unease for a few moments before a thought dawns on him. "Why does this happen? What is the point of all this trouble?" he questions.

"The legends state that it is to ensure every young mermaid is raised in a loving family. It also gives them a safe place to bond when they are old enough. Once the mermaid's magic appears, she goes to the sea with her mother and learns the ways of the mermaids. Most of the time, the mermaid is only a few years old. This is to guarantee she can control her powers and safely navigate the seas. When she reaches adulthood, she returns to her father on land for the first bond, in most cases. For the second, the mermaid council directs her to one of our mermaids living on land. Then the third bond is with her soul mate, as I said before. That's what is supposed to happen, though. As you can see, the bonds don't always go according to plan,"

"What about the mer - uh, the male mermaids?" he inquires.

"There are none. The mermaid properties are attached to the female components. A man cannot be a mermaid," she answers.

"Oh," he breathes. She dries her tears and brushes off her dress, standing up. He doesn't comprehend what she is doing until she places her bag on her shoulder and turns to him. "Where are you going?"

"I'll surely be human in a year's time. I may as well prepare legitimate housing and find a way to make a living if I cannot go home. I am sorry for all the trouble I have brought you. Please disregard the pull to me and let me live my life," she petitions him. "I can't handle the year knowing it is futile. I wish you well, but this must be goodbye,"

"Wait!" he blurts, taking her hand on instinct. "There has to be a way to break the curse so you can stay a mermaid! I can help you find it. Or I can at least help you start your life if we can't. I know many people who owe me favors," he says with a hopeful smile.

She looks down to their interlocked hands, considering his idea. She moves her gaze to his eyes, returning a minuscule smile, "I guess it wouldn't hurt to try,"

He smiles wider and pulls her into a hug as an impulse, then quickly backs away, realizing what he had done. They avoid eye contact for a minute before the pirate brushes it off.

"If we are going to work together, I suppose introductions are in order, lass." He bows in a jesting manner, "Captain Killian Jones at your service, milady. However, most people call me Hook," he states, brandishing his hook with a mischievous look in his eyes.

She returns a whimsical smile, curtsying deeply. "And I, dear captain, am called Sirena." She stands back up and they meet eyes, laughing sincerely.
