"You idiot!" Vincent hissed as Emily laid in front of him, tied to a bed and drooling. She couldn't feel anything, and couldn't move anything or anywhere, but was still conscious.

Though she wished that she wasn't.

Vincent and Lavender were bickering over her like siblings (they looked so similar, they probably were), with Lav being empathetic and taking her side, while Vincent, though yelling at both of them, sounded worried and scared out of his mind. Finally, after Lavender had admitted defeat, Vincent calmed down and put his hands on his hips.

"Check her arm," he ordered. "The left one."

Lav nodded and picked up Emily's arm, turning it over. "The tracker is in place," she sighed.

"Well, maybe it is for the best," Vincent said, sounding a bit optimistic, despite his previous behavior. "This place is supposed to train us for our military. Emily really seems like a strong recruit."

"Can we really trust Unknown, Vincent?" Lav asked in a hushed voice.

"She hasn't broken any promises yet... she just acts weird sometimes, that's all."

Lavender huffed and unstrapped Emily, glaring at Vincent the entire time. "'Weird'?! Look at her! Mara did this!"

Vincent stared at her with huge eyes, and Lav covered her mouth in shock. She mumbled out 'sorry's and turned, looking at the ground. "I told you to stop using that name," he said with steady anger, "you know what happens when you use that name!"

"Alright, guys, stop fighting and get out of my way," someone commanded, and Emma pushed through the two, shoving them into separate walls. She picked Emily up in her arms and placed her on her bed.

"Where were you at dinner, Emma? We missed you," Lav asked, worry gracing her features.

"I was just catching up on some paperwork, that's all," Emma lied. Emily was surprised about how quickly she thought it up, about how easily and casually she told Lavender, and bit her lip.

"Do you ever get a break?" Vincent grumbled. "Let me rephrase that: does anybody ever get a break?"

"Unknown's like a queen bee. She's just trying to do what's best for the hive," Emma shrugged. She patted Emily on the head. "I hope you're fully functional by tomorrow for your first day of training."

At the word 'training', both Vincent and Lavender winced.

...

She woke up to the sound of an alarm that she didn't set and turned to see Mara sitting on her dresser. "Rise and shine," she said in her usual monotoned voice, "training is in 20 minutes."

Emily groaned and forced herself to sit up; she had never been much of a morning person. She turned to look at her clock.

3:40 am.

Her face heated up angrily. "Are you kidding me?!" she growled.

"Hey, you don't have healing powers, you can't be a nurse," Mara shrugged. "Besides, this routine always makes me feel better. I love night."

Emily sighed and swung her legs out from underneath the covers. She shivered and looked at the temperature: 60° Fahrenheit.

"It's healthier to sleep while cold," Mara pointed out as she changed it quickly. Emily flicked on the lights and gave her the darkest scowl she could muster in her half-asleep mind. "Now, hurry up; the trainers are waiting."

...

She shuffled into the training room, which just looked like an organized gym. About 50 other people were lined up in front of Emma, Vincent, and Grayson, wearing the same outfit as Emily: a full body suit that was silver and black, and had a panel in the center of the chest with a glowing, beating heart in it. She lined up at the end and felt self-conscious as she looked at the perfectly lined-up, still beings around her.
