My toes reached the final stage of carpet as I flowed onto the staircase bottom. I met eye to eye with Yuri before we each broke eye contact for our stares were too strong. I hovered over to her and took a seat close to where she was at the dining room table. To no surprise she was sipping a cup of tea. However to my amazement she had moved out of a bedroom area without changing and instead sat in her bedrest as I did in my pyjamas. I tried to think of something cocky or happy to say but thought of nothing in that moment of time.
Settling on a topic I at last spoke to break out incredibly tense bout of silence. "The snows stopped falling" I said in a dull and resigned tone, attempting to sound as normal as was possible. "I should be able to leave in a few days" I said again this time trying to sound hopeful but not happy. I began to bury my head again before Yuri spoke "Yes... hopefully it won't be as ..." she trailed off before correcting herself apprehensively "-as, cold".
Despite having exchanged but only a few words I think each of us said what we needed to say. Or at least showed what we meant so strongly the air transformed to a breathable thickness. Despite how nice it was just to act although nothing happened I did have to say something, the situation could not be undermined to terms of importance.
Making it as easy as I could for her I tried to act although I enjoyed last night. Though I intended to outwards expression to be a sort of disguised irony it was not in the slightest false. "Did you enjoy last night Yuri?" with my façade in full face, repurposing all the guilty pleasure we indulged in as sins of my own. I expected a burial of the face or blushing of the cheeks but Yuri just looked down and put her tea to one side.
"Alex, I'm sorry I don't usually do stuff like that, like this! I know you think I'm horrible for acting as I did, but I can't help it, I just can't help myself!" Yuri finished her sentence urgently and with a distraught passion. I responded "Yuri, I don't think you're strange, remember I was there too" I tried to be assuring, instead I sounded more like a vindictive reminder. "It's O.K Alex" Yuri, now distraught as ever stated with frightening fluency, "I know what I've done, just why can't I stop acting like this?" suddenly Yuri leaned forwards and clasped both my shoulders. "What wrong with me?!" she cried and so she did cry, burying her head in her arms at last.
Words hadn't helped so I instead allowed her to grip to me. I could feel what I presumed to be her tears wet the corner of my top as she silently sobbed into me, no noise just a series of thrusting movements. This went on for quite some time, midway Yuri had seemed to cease moving. The saturation of my shoulder continued and breathing though regulated with still there, Yuri leaned into me, deathly still. The time had come for me to apologise so gripping both of her arms, careful to avoid the mutilated side I raised her to my eye level, allowing her to still support herself on me with her hands, but forced to look at me.
As I stared into those delicate magenta eyes she possessed they only seemed to sparkle more, her face and lashes wet with tears. As I stared I opened my mouth before thinking for a split second about holding Yuri, use cuddled together is loving embrace, every part of me wanted to say something else but the words just fell out: You enjoyed it, didn't you Yuri? I ended my sentence with a malicious resonation as it echoed through the silent room.
-What did I do?
I couldn't even place where the words came from, I was thinking nothing of the sort. I cringed, visibly, before looking back towards Yuri, to my utter befuddlement she was smiling. Taking her sleeve to wipe her eyes she took her hands off me before standing up. Eyes closed she ushered a little laugh, an atonement of madness unmistakable in her joy. "Thanks Alex", she leaned in closer "You do always know what to say". With that Yuri proceed to open her eyes and walk away. I had no logical reason that could bring about why this situation was at all possible.
-I didn't even say it. That wasn't me. Then why did it help?
The tone of Yuri's voice shook me. Yet after everything I just decided to follow her, rather than let another moment of near unprecedented abnormality slip through my fingers. "Yuri" I called after her "Yuri, are you really O.K?" I inquired. Turning to face me her smile never faded even as she talked, eyes alive with, passion?
Lust.
"No." her breathing became heavy, incoherent. "I'm fine!" she said in a loud whisper, as her happiness seemed to intensify. I was becoming very worried, but before I too could rise and ask some more questions Yuri disappeared up her stairs.
I could swear I heard her emit a small giggle as she did, adding to her uncharacteristic near insanity.
-It's just Yuri...
You told yourself.
-Just Yuri...
-Then why does nothing feel right?
Balance of nearly everything being thrown off by last night, I sighed to myself before I, as was becoming usual, forgave everything. The rest of the day was very dull. The day was much brighter and so was beginning to melt the snow, Yuri made lunch and dinner but not breakfast. We spent out time speaking though very carefully about nothing of importance and reading, analysing more literature than I ever had in my entire life. Yuri began to act normal again near the end of the day, shy, attentive and cautious as she should have been.
Having completed what the day had to offer we both sat down in front of the television as was customary. Yuri got comfortable before I mauvered around the channels for her. She had tried once before but had not yet grasped the motor control nor knowledge to do it by herself. Tuning it to a horror film it sent a normal smile across Yuri's face, something that was always welcome in my presence. "Alex, could you get me something?" Yuri asked, a very rare occurrence indeed. "Sure!" I said trying to make her more comfortable.
"I, have a bottle of juice in my fridge could you, maybe-" already getting up I was determined to please. "Sure Yuri!" I replied in a chirpy voice. Opening Yuri's fridge I saw that we had heaps of food stuffs left to feed us which was growing as one of my concerns. I patrolled around the glass shelves until I found a thin bottle, purple and with a silver capped top. I collected two glasses, each a very nice crystal from Yuri's cupboard before returning back to the couch. I was met with a thanks and was finally able to for a moment share a moment of detoxifying normality as I poured us each a glass.
