No night for once proceeded with nothing odd, something which seemed in great rarity, at least for these few days. The damaging cold of the past nights was gone, the snow had stopped falling and had begun to melt, yet it was still window height, something told me that process would take some time. Going to bed earlier we each said our goodnights before enjoying a comfortable bed, the temperature at least a not below zero. I slept almost immediately, for some reason I was just so tired now. Exasperated as I'm sure it could be called.
No dreams transpired last night which seemed to benefit me more than challenge. I used to dream of, 'stuff', things and pictures by now it seemed to be just an intangible string of voices and sounds. Things that I could not comprehend, a mental mess. Eventually sleep did come, as quick as I needed, my dreams hastened close behind it.
Load me
I awake in a room. Something lay across from me. It was warm.
I remembered shifting closer. The thing breathed.
All I could see was crimson and the room, like two halves of a single picture.
One single moment etched into infinity, living without time.
I felt like I should have experience a great feeling of discomfort.
Like something was wrong. Like something had gone wrong.
But I couldn't see what.
I knew that morning was drawing closer.
And that was when the thing stopped breathing.
I awoke naturally for the first time in days and for once was just simply cold, not frozen. I had the joy on putting on clean clothes, taking a shower and waking up without any conundrum, unfortunately not waking up to another pair of clinging arms. Yuri was already downstairs when I finally made my way down there. She looked very happy, of course, in the kitchen. She wore her standard casual clothes as I had seen her wear time and time before. Namely her cream polo and dark denim skirt, with the essential high socks.
I began to motion over to her with the intent of helping out once in my life. She certainly did look ecstatic, about what I did not know. Yuri's mouth was permanently sealed into her sweet little smile. Hands clutched in every idle moment where they were not in use together and against her breasts. Every few seconds it would seem she noticed she was still smiling, badly corrected herself with a shy downwards grin before smiling yet again.
"Do you need me to do anything Yuri" I inquired with my typical tone. "Oh!, umm, ..., sorry..." Yuri trailed off briefly, interrupted by her own grin. It was quite normal and very cute, although so abundant she must have experienced something really special. "You can, do, plates!" Yuri spurted at once, "You can but our plates out if you would like". "Sure." I said back, proceeding find the drawer in which the plates were located. Apon finding them I burdened my arms with two, along with some's knifes, forks and cups before laying the table in a symmetrical fashion.
As I placed the last cup it landed with a massive crash too loud to be it's own followed by a further lapse of small smashes, bangs and flops. Staring in disbelief at the cup I reaffirmed to had not made the noise before turning to look behind me. The floor was covered in a red liquid, filled with meaty chunks. The crimson stained the floor, creeping over tiles and across the room. It was a glass of chutney. In actuality the entire cupboard had collapsed, flour dust rose in large, heavy clouds and several wooden shelves as well as many jugs, saucers and bottles rested in a hep on the kitchen tiles.
Yuri didn't seem hurt, though she was inches away from the pantry. Her smile had faded into a mildly concerned expression, probably from shock. Her clothes were powdered from flour, and left foot soaked in what looked to be spilt apple vinegar. "Are you okay?" I asked with an anxious requirement. Yuri stayed still for a few more seconds before blinking both eyes and responding to me. "Yes, I'm-I'm O.K" Yuri coughed half heartedly, lungs filled with flour, shaking her left foot for it had already become saturated in the apple vinegar.
"What did you do?" I mused, met with a series of excuses followed by quiet defeat. I immediately set to help with the clean up, as did Yuri. I insisted on cleaning up the glass and shattered remains while Yuri collected salvageable items and mopped the floor. When we finished we were left with messed clothes, and four wooden plates that had slipped out from the cupboard.
"Sorry..." Yuri sighed, her face tranquil albeit white with flower resin. "It's fine..." I sigh back. "Do you know how to fix it?" Yuri asked. I replied simply "I'm sure I can figure it out...". I spend around half an hour examining what had actually happened. The cupboards main slider bracket had given way leading to each shelf breaking off. It would seem although it was originally secured a mired of fitting incisions on the way. I did not know how, but it had come lose.
I knew Yuri was intelligent but not especially literal in thinking. "What happened?" Yuri quizzically inspects as I try to see for myself how the shelving literally pulled itself from the wall. "I think it slid out of its holds" I said cluelessly, trying to sound although I had some air of understanding about me. 'Can we fix it?" Yuri asked me, "Yeah, I, I think so..." I replied before setting to work right away.
As I tried to shove the drawer rack into place as Yuri eventually stopped hovering behind my shoulder. She stacked a few ingredients onto a bench for temporary safe keeping before leaving my peripheral view as I worked. Again, I was not a strong person but the parts I was working with were heavy anyway. Made from reinforced plywood is was a great surprise they came lose, and more so I was able to lift them.
After I slotted the frame into place amongst the wall grips I was already stuffed. A little sweat began to prick up in my hair and around the bends of my nose. I would have taken a break, but I could feel the hope in my success emanating from Yuri, wherever she was, I didn't take the time to look. A started lifting the heavy wooden slots into place, each one took a tremendous amount of effort and time to place, as it needed to be dexterously positioned and placed with tremendous force.
I had one left before my shoulder went out in a little *pop* which was audibly very low. Suddenly it ached like hell but it was not enough to deter me. I finally mustered what strength I had left, shoulder breaking, and slotted the last panel into where it was suppost to go. The pain was blunt and very harsh, the finished product very satisfying however.
It turned out Yuri was sitting at the dining room table and had been watching me from what I presumed to be the whole time, nearly forty minutes. I painted on a false smile, my new found shoulder injury inhibiting anymore enthusiasm which could have in normal circumstances been present. Yuri noticed without hesitation, it was hard not to when I was tenaciously holding it and she had watch it burst the moment it did. "Are you alright?" she asked in a normal tone of voice. I stared apathetically, pained though unresentful, through great resilience.
