"Come on." Matt said taking my hand and walking to the door to the Chasm. I stay at my spot, not wanting to move.
"No." I said, resisting. "Why?" he asked. I look at the floor, rubbing. My cheek.
"Don't worry about it," he said. "He's not gonna hurt you."
"How do you know?" I looked up at him. "I didn't think he'd ever hit me... but look what happened." I frowned, still looking at the floor. He lifts up my chin, so that we look at each other.
"If he tries and touches you-", "He'll pummel you." I smiled lightly. "There," he smiled. "I like it when you smiled." he kissed me lightly and I pull away.
"Okay." I smiled as he walked both of us downstairs and into the Chasm. "Whats your grade on the board?" I asked him. "Im ninth place," he looked at me. "You?", "Third." I smile. He puts his hands in the air. "Badass." he smiled. "Shut up!" I laugh and he puts his arm around me, walking into the Pit.
"Time for matches!" Eric said over the talking of the initiates.
All the initiates walk to him, just below the mat. "Simon and Aaron!" he looked at me. Simon walks onto the mat.
Simon is number one in the fighting part of the chart.
I walk onto the stage, angry that Eric would ever call me by my Erudite name. "Its Ace." I looked at Eric, walking onto the mat. Eric rolls his eyes at me and walks off the mat.
Simon holds up his fists to his face. Right when I lift up my hands, Simon throws a punch to my face but I jolt my head to the side, and come around him, kicking him in the rib. He groans and recovers, sinking his fist in my stomach.
I fall to the floor, breathless; gasping. "Get up!" he stood over me. I look up at him and punches me square in the jaw. "Stop!" I cried as he was about to kick me. Simon looks at Eric and Eric looks at me. "Im done!" I dragged myself off the mat. "You're giving up?!" Eric crossed his arms.
"Eric, don't." Four said sternly, looking at Eric. "Get up." he dragged me to my feet. "Let go!" I try and wiggle out of his tight grasp. "Eric! Let him go!" I heard Matt yell, following us.
I already know where were going. Were going to the Chasm.
Eric turns me to look at him. "Dauntless don't give up." he said sternly and pushed me over the ledge of the bridge.
I groan as I catch myself on a bar on the bridge. Everyone runs over to us. "Eric!" Matt pushed through the crowd.
"You either let go or you hang on for five minutes." Eric looked at his watch.
I look at Matt, grasping to the bar on the bridge. "Eric." I whispered looking up at him. "What?" he kneeled in front of me.
A spray of water splashes onto my back and I pinch my lips shut, preventing me from crying. "When are you going to let go?" I asked him. "What-", "Why do you do this to me? Were done. Why are you trying to kill me?" I felt tears threaten to spill over my eyes.
He looks at me, his eyes soft again before they turn hard and cold again. "Get up." he said.
Matt, Josh, and Pierce all run to help me up. When they help me up, my arms feel like just bones. Matt pulls me into a hug.
"Are you okay?" he whispered in my ear. I nod, burying my face in his shoulder. I turn and look at Eric and he frowns but it quickly turns into a glare. "Next matches." Eric walked past us.
I wipe the blood off my face and Matt looks down at me and helps me walk to the Pit. Matt has to fight a girl and he quickly wins.
"Tomorrow will be your fear landscapes so be prepared." Four said. I look at Matt and he looks at me, nervously.
