I hear someone fall into the net with a grunt. I look back and laugh when I see Matthew shaking as he crawls off of the net. "If you're scared of that..." Four smirked. "You're not going to survive the next week" he looked at him. "This isn't really a nice home coming party" Matthew said behind me, now on the floor.
Another scream.
"This is Dauntless. The closest thing we'll get to a party will be a funeral" Four said straightly. "Thats a joke right?" Matthew laughed slightly. "No...its not"
Another scream.
Matthew, other initiates, and I all wait for the last initiate. Her red dress flies up to her face as she jumped.
I turn my head when some guys elbow each other and smile. "What pigs" I murmured. The Amity girl rolls off the net. "Now that were all here, follow me" Four said walking into a hallway. We all look at each other-confused- and follow him.
As we walk into the hallway, I hear what sounds like rushing water. "Where are we going?" I asked Matthew. "I don't know" he shrugged his shoulders.
"The Chasm reminds us that there's a fine line between bravery and idiocy." Four said loudly, louder than the rushing water, as we stood over the edge.
The Chasm is a ravine filled with rapidly running water and sharp rocks. "Has anyone died here?" another Erudite boy asked behind me. "Wait I know that voice" I said to myself. I turn and see my friend Emit. Four laughs. "There has been plenty of deaths here" he said and walked over the bridge that connected to the other side of the Chasm.
I slow down my pace and wait for Emit. He passes me up and trip him, causing him to stumble. "Who the- Aaron!" he yelled. He hugs me tightly. "Ouch" I squirmed. "Sorry" he laughed and released me.
I hear a cry and people yelling. "Whats going on?!" Emit said walking towards the crowd. I follow him. I hear more cries. Its Matthew. I push people out of the way to get to him. He's hanging over the jagged rocks. "Help!" he yelled. Four stands there and crosses his arms. "Four help him!" I yelled, walking towards him. "He chose to slip. He can choose to pull himself up or not" he looked at him. I did the only thing I could do. Help.
I grasp the banister tightly. So tightly that my knuckles turn white and offer my hand to him. He takes it and almost pulls me down. "Come on. You have to help me here" I grunted. He swings himself over the edge and rolls onto his back. I cant tell if he's sweating or if the water wet him. His glistening skin shines under the dim light. He looks perfect.
He stands up like nothing happened. "Thanks" he frowned. "Lets go on" Four said and walked past us.
"That was brave of you" Matthew walked us behind four. "Than-" "Hey!" Emit yelled. "Jesus! Don't scare me!" I yelled. "Sorry" Emit laughed. "Wow...who's this?" Emit asked raising an eyebrow at Matthew. "Oh. Matthew, this is Emit. Emit, Matthew" I introduced them. "Hey" Matthew shook Emits hand. "Hi" Emit said, almost in a flirting manor.
Is he doing what I think he's doing?! Wait? What am I doing! Since when did I start liking Matthew?
Matthew laughs. "Are you flirting with me?" he smiled. "Ha-ha. No...why did it work?" Emit smiled. They laugh together. Damn it! Why did I introduce them?!
"Hey I think were suppose to follow Four" I told them. "Right" Emit smiled.
I think Ive just been third-wheeled.
"This is where you will all be sleeping. These are the bunks" Four said walking through a dark room.
"I cant even see" Matthew whispered to me. I laugh slightly but hold it in. I cant be seen laughing here. Will they think I'm weak if i do laugh?
Whatever.
