{ CYRUS'S POV }

Me: Tj?

I held my phone in front of my face, the bright screen causing me to squint. I waited an hour before giving up and setting my phone face down next to my pillow. The thoughts of what could have happened kept me awake. When the sun began to rise, I checked my phone eagerly. Tj hadn't replied to any of my texts from the night before. It was Monday morning, the start of the week. The start of school a new school week. Normally, I'd be looking forward to a Monday, but for some reason I felt different today.

There was a knock at my bedroom door.

"Come in" I shouted.

"Hey sweetie, good morning" my mom said, with the same smile on her face that she always has. "Are you feeling okay?"

"Yeah, why?" I didn't realize that my face had the same disappointed expression it made when I checked my phone for texts from Tj.

"Never mind" she said. "It's 7:00, you're going to be late for school."

"Right" I began. "-school."

My mom sighed at my response. "If I could keep you home, I would, but I'm going to be at work all day."

She sat next to me, running her fingers through my hair in an attempt to fix it. Her arm snaked around me, pulling me closer. I melted into this sudden act of support.

"My baby, what happened?"

My head rested on her shoulder. She kissed the top of my head.

"I don't wanna talk about it."

There's really nothing to talk about. I waited all night for a text I knew I wasn't going to get, and that's all that happened.

It's just a stupid text.

"Is it-" she paused, picking her next words carefully. "-about a girl?"

Ugh.

She always jumps to conclusions whenever I'm anything but happy. Oh right, and why does she always assume it's about a girl?

Why can't it ever be about-

"-or a boy?" she wondered, her tone changing into something unrecognizable.

-a boy.

She separated herself from our embrace, to get a better look at me.

"-Cyrus?" she asked, studying my unclear expression.

"Mom-"

"Hey, Cyrus, you ready to go, buddy?" my stepdad asked, peeking into the room. "We have to leave soon."

My clueless stepdad stared blankly at my mom and I.

"Y-yeah, let me get dressed." I stuttered.

I released myself from my mom's grip, standing up. I gave my mom a look, telling her to leave so I could get ready.

"R-right, I'll leave you to it then" she nodded, clearing her throat nervously.

"Thanks" I mumbled, closing the door behind them.
