{ TJ'S POV }
"Can you please help him get through Geometry?" the math teacher standing next to me asked.
This wasn't the first time I was publicly embarrassed because of my lack of intelligence.
I mean, I'm not doing that bad in math. I only have a D. It's better than what I had last semester.
"Y-yeah, sure" my new tutor stuttered. She reached out her hand to greet me. "Buffy."
I've never met her personally, but I heard she's a really talented basketball player. Although, right now she's my tutor.
"Tj" I replied, not reacting to the hand in front of me that she soon retracted.
"Tj, this will be your new tutor until you can manage to get your grade up in math" the teacher firmly stated.
I nodded.
"Okay, I'll leave you two to get acquainted" he said before pivoting and walking out of the room.
The walls creeped with silence, but the awkwardness was worse. It was overwhelming.
"So" Buffy started. "I heard you like basketball?"
I made eye contact with her, just to give her a look of judgement.
"Yes" I scoffed. "-and?"
She was obviously taken aback by my sudden snarky response, since her face noticeably reflected the shock.
Why was I acting this way?
Oh, that's right. She's my tutor, that's why. Another reason to feel more pathetic and dumber than I already do.What are people going to think?
Wow, another athlete with a tutor because he's not smart enough to keep his own grades up.
I cannot be just another dumb jock.
"Did I do something wrong?" she questioned.
Yes.
"No" I shrugged.
"Okay" she managed to let out. "So what do you want to start with? Geometry? Or maybe even Algebra 1 if you're-"
Are you kidding me?
I'm not going through with this right now.
I rolled my eyes, followed by an obviously fake smile. My feet had a mind of their own and walked out of the tutoring room.
Jeez.
I must've been scrolling through my phone for a while, because by the time I checked the time it had been 40 minutes. I was now in front of a restaurant, with two large words plastered on the front that spelled out The Spoon.
At least I can read.
I debated whether or not I should go in, until my stomach made an inhuman sound, begging for food.
I pushed the door open, causing the sound of a tiny bell ring as I walked in. My eyes studied the entire room, scanning for somewhere to sit. My eyes came to a sudden stop on a familiar face.
Buffy. She was sitting across from someone whose face I couldn't quite see. She made eye contact with me and her mouth began moving.
She's probably talking about me.
Buffy quickly plastered on a smile and so did I. A fake one, of course. Suddenly, her hand waved at me, signaling for me to come over.
Ugh.
Being the oh-so-kind guy that I am, I made my way over, making sure to be as sweet as I can be.
"Hey Tj" she spoke, through her teeth.
"Hey" I gritted. "-Buffy."
The side of my face was burning from the stare of the person sitting across from her. Naturally, I turned to see who was staring at me.
It was a guy. I think I've seen him before.
"Oh, that's Cyrus" she said, almost as if reading my mind.
Cyrus sent a sincere smile at me.
He seems-
"Hi, I'm Cyrus" he said. "-and you're Tj, I'm assuming?"
-nice.
"Yeah, hey" I remarked.
"Yeah, Cyrus this is the guy I was telling you that I'm tutoring."
"I figured. There's not many Tj's at our school" he jokingly responded.
"Oh, shoot" Buffy said, peering down at her phone. "I-I have to go, I'm sorry Cyrus. My mom needs my help with something."
Buffy's eyes flickered between Cyrus and I.
"Cyrus, will you be okay?" she asked, concerned for Cyrus.
He nodded in response.
Buffy managed to sneak in one more tater tot before sending a smile at Cyrus and a glare at me, then bolting out of the restaurant.
"Mind if I sit?" I asked.
Why am I doing this.
"Yeah, sure" he smiled, nervously.
He apparently noticed my longing stare at the tater tots on the table that I craved, because he pushed the basket towards me.
"Go ahead, have some""Thanks"
My hands leaped for them, allowing myself to consume what was left of the basket.
"Someone's a little hungry" he chuckled.
I paused, looking up at him.
"Yeah" I said, my mouth filled with tater tots."So, you're friends with Buffy, huh?" I asked, before wiping my mouth of the crumbs that surrounded it.
"Mhm, I have been for years"
"I think she hates me" I let out.
His face filled with confusion. "Why would she hate you, Tj?"
I shrugged.
"I mean, I just met her today and I've been kind of-" I started. "-not so nice to her."
Why am I telling him this? If anything, he's just going to gossip about it to Buffy.
"I don't think she hates you, Tj"
Why does he keep saying my name?
"I would hate me if I were her" I stated bluntly.
"She doesn't hate you, Tj"
He keeps saying my name.
"Well, how do you know that? Did she tell you?" I asked curiously.
"I know Buffy" he began. "-remember, I've known her for a long time, Tj. I know how she thinks."
The way he says my name.
