Chapter Three: Unwanted Attention
Heads turn my way as I try to get to my locker. Can you all stop staring at me? Like, just give me some space please. I don't understand why people like Finn love being so popular.
I open my locker and out of the corner of my eye, I see Paige and Alyssa push through the crowd.
"Dani, what the fuck is going on?" Paige asks.
"I told you guys it's nothing," I stutter.
"Girl, don't lie to us. Why did Finn Wolfhard tag you in a post?" Alyssa says.
"And seem so happy about it?" Paige adds.
"Well, I got my period and had to buy some emergency tampons. Let's just say, Finn was the only cashier and made fun of me for buying them and I got mad," I spill, slightly embarrassed.
"Oh damn," the girls say in sync.
"Whatever. It'll be blown over by the end of the week and Finn will have deleted the post. He probably just wanted to get on my nerves, or better yet, in my pants," I laugh.
"That douchebag," Paige shakes her head.
"Whatever," I say with a smile and shut my locker.
What I didn't know what that Finn was standing behind my locker door the entire time. How did I not see him?
"Holy shit, what are you doing here?" I ask, startled. I try to act like I wasn't gossiping about him.
"Oh, you know, just came to say hey to my favourite customer," Finn says casually, putting his hands in his pockets.
"Bullshit," I mumble.
"Pardon me?" He asks with a smirk.
"Don't you start that again, Wolfhard," I state confidently with a small laugh.
"Trust me, I know better now," he laughs.
"Anyways, um, I have to go to class."
"How come you can't wait for me? We have English, silly," Finn laughs.
I roll my eyes in annoyance.
"I'll see you there," I say, starting to leave.
"I'll come with you," he suggests.
"That's just fine, you don't have to," I respond, really hoping he doesn't. I don't need the extra attention from anyone. Not Finn, not the people roaming in the halls, not the teachers. No one.
"No, I insist," he pushes.
"Fine whatever, come with me and be bored," I say, giving in. "Bye girls, see you at lunch," I say to my friends, giving them a wave.
Everyone is staring at Finn and I as we walk to our English room. Anxiety flows through me. Do I look okay? What are they thinking? I hate this attention.
Suddenly Finn swings his arm around me.
"What in hell are you doing?" I ask.
"Just walking to class with you," he replies calmly.
"Well could you tell me why your arm is there?" I ask annoyed.
"Does it bother you, Dani?" He smirks.
"Yes, actually, it does." I roll my eyes and remove his arm as we enter class.
"Finn Wolfhard is on time? This is a first, I'm impressed. Dani must be taking good care of you, Finn," our English teacher, Mr. Thompson says and smirks at us.
"Oh, god, no we are not dating, let me make that clear," I say, revolted. No way in hell.
Mr. Thompson shakes his head at me and chuckles. I sit down in my usual spot and put my bag on the chair beside mine. The desks are in pairs and I sit alone, so I take advantage of the free space. I pull out my phone and go through the follow requests again.
"Mind if I sit here?" Finn asks.
"Actually, yes," I reply shortly, not looking up from my phone.
"Great, thanks!" Finn smirks as he takes my bag off of my chair and sits in it. I roll my eyes and sigh. The bell rings, and slowly people walk inside.
The first thing everyone seems to notice is me and Finn. Most of them smirk at us, others shake their heads, and some are just plain surprised that Finn is on time. Normally he's 20 minutes late.
"Welcome everyone, happy Friday. Please read these short stories I am handing out and write a summary about it. Then you will work with your desk partner and discuss the metaphors. Don't forget to write those down. I have included a list of definitions for you to fill out on the back. Do your best," Mr. Thompson says with a smile, handing out small booklets.
I get to work and start reading the short story right away, while Finn sits back in his chair on his phone. I almost ask what he's doing, but then decide that it's better to just mind my own business.
"So, Dani, how've you been?" Finn asks after a while.
"Fine," I reply, starting to write my summary.
"That's good. Wanna work together? This stuff makes no fucking sense," he suggests.
"Sure, you find the definitions," I say. It's such an easy job, but it'll save me some time in the end I guess.
"Sure," he says with a smile. His smile seems much more real this time, not fake and forced like it is with all of the other popular kids. It makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable.
"Have you read the story yet?" I ask.
"Well, I started to. But this metaphor crap doesn't make sense," he replies, his attention focused to writing a definition on his paper.
I can't help but smile a little bit.
"I'll help you out," I say smiling.
