Chapter Sixteen: Caleb's New Behaviour

I smile as I walk into my math class after the bell rings.

Finally it seems as though I have Paige and Alyssa back on my side. I've definitely missed them a lot. However, Finn was nowhere to be found after what happened in the cafeteria.

"Hey, Dani!" Someone calls. I scan the room for the owner of the familiar voice. I smile when I see Caleb waving at me and smiling.

"Hi Caleb!" I reply, walking over to him.

"Wanna sit with me?" He asks.

"Of course!" I exclaim, occupying the empty seat beside him.

"Are your knees okay after that fall?" He laughs.

"Yes, they're just fine," I giggle.

"I still feel bad about knocking you over!"

"Caleb, I told you it's fine! It's my fault anyways, I was completely distracted," I laugh.

"I could've moved out of the way."

"Stop worrying about it omg."

"Fine."

"Good."

We sit in a somewhat awkward silence. What do I say now? Am I supposed to say anything?

"Good afternoon," Mrs. Gilbert, my math teacher says, and the class quiets down. "Today's class should be fairly easy for most of you. I will be writing some equations related to our current unit on the board that will be handed in for marks. After you finish you may catch up on any other outstanding assignments."

"Great," I whisper.

"What?" Caleb asks.

"Oh, I just don't really understand all this math. It's kind of confusing," I say, feeling embarrassed.

"I can help if you want, I find most of the algebra pretty easy," he offers.

"Really? I mean, if you have enough patience to help me you're totally welcome to," I say, laughing slightly.

"Of course I'll have enough patience to help you. At least you're willing to do the math, Jack always tries and gets me to do his for him. One time he even tried to pay me to do it for him," he says.

"Damn," I say, not really surprised. Typical Jack. I glance behind me and see him sitting in the back corner of the class, on his phone.

"I know right," he starts. "I was going to so that I could make a couple bucks, but that's cheating which isn't fair. I work hard for my grades."

"That's good of you," I respond with a smile.

"Thanks," he replies, a big smile spreading across his face.

While Mrs. Gilbert writes equations on the board, I decide to quickly text Finn.

me:
hangout at break?
we can talk now, i'm really sorry. i just didn't wanna deal with it all while we were in front of all those people

I set my phone on my desk and I wait for a response.

Throughout the rest of the class, Caleb and I get to know each other. He's  such a sweetheart, and I can't believe I haven't gotten to know him earlier. Thanks to him I understand the math much better and feel more confident about it. However, it's been half an hour and still no response from Finn.
