Chapter Eight: Social Media Side Affects

"Dani, what the hell!" My mom exclaims when I get into her car.

"Mom, I swear I didn't do anything," I say.

"How could you end up getting arrested! This is going to be going on your criminal record! What about college, or getting a job, or-"

"Mom, I don't know!" I exclaim. "Calm down, please."

"Me? Calm? How should I be calm when my daughter, who's a good girl, gets arrested! I thought you hated Wyatt Oleff and his crew. Why were you hanging out with them?" She asks, suspicion in her voice.

"Well, um, technically I wasn't," I say, not knowing where to start. I stare out the window and at the setting sun. It's 7:20pm now. We've been in the police station for what feels like forever.

"Out with it, Dani," she says sternly.

"Fine! I was with Finn," I admit, my cheeks heating up.

"Wolfhard?"

"Yeah."

"Oh, I thought he was a part of Wyatt's crew and that you didn't like him," she says.

"Yeah, um, he's been really nice to me," I reply awkwardly. This is so weird.

"Ahh, I see," she says with a small smile. "And what were you guys doing?"

"Mom, we're just friends. He just wanted to get some frozen yogurt and let me tag along," I say, unsure if I'm lying or not.

He did ask me to join him. And we aren't dating. But he did buy mine for me, which is what people do on a date. What am I thinking?

"It sounds to me that Finn likes you," she smirks.

"Oh god Mom, no. It couldn't happen. It won't happen," I defend.

Finn could get anyone he wanted with his popularity. The girls swoon over him and would do anything to even get him to simply say hello. I roll my eyes. Finn doesn't like me. I'm probably just next on the list of people he wants to fuck, which makes me angry. He'll be gone soon. And everything will go back to normal.

I don't exactly want it to end, though. I've enjoyed Finn's company. And he's not a total douchebag like I thought he was. Not anymore anyways. I open up my camera roll and stare at the screen shotted photo he posted when he tagged me.

I smile at the picture, admiring all of his flawless features. His hair looks so messy and so cute in this photo. And his smile is so contagious, even though it's only a photo.

"What are you smiling at?" Mom asks, turning into our house and pulling into the garage.

"Oh nothing," I lie.

"Dani, don't lie," Mom says with a laugh. "Is it Finn?"

"No. Alyssa sent me a funny text," i say, feeling my cheeks heat up a little. That always happens when I lie.

"Alright. Well, there's leftover casserole for you in the fridge. You must be starving," she smiles, getting out of the car. "I have to get ready for my night shift. We'll talk about this whole scenario tomorrow when I get home, okay?"

"Okay," I say, sighing. I watch my Mom walk inside the house. I close my eyes, and start to feel tears coming back.

I got arrested.

It's all my mind can think about, and I know that I've definitely fucked up the future for myself. Way to go, Dani.

After my mental breakdown, I find the energy to get out of the car and into my room. I lie down on my bed and start to fear what's happening on social media. I doubt that there's anything up there.
After all, the police took our phones for any type of investigation on what happened.

I take out my phone as curiosity gets the better of me. I can feel my anxiety rise as I open Snapchat.

Literally every other Snapchat Story has reposted footage of Finn and I walking out of the store and into the car. I watch in shock as I storm off after yelling at Finn. And then suddenly there he goes; running at full speed towards Wyatt yelling at the top of his lungs. The video ends as Wyatt gets pushed on to the ground. I skip to the next story, which happens to be Noah's.

His video is the whole fight. Tears fill up in my eyes as I rewatch what happened and I relive the terrible moment. The police cars come, and Jack and Noah bolt. The video ends shortly after.

I've received a bunch of snaps, and eighteen people added me. All of them either asked what happened, or had some sort of smart ass comment that I didn't need to see.

This is so embarrassing, what's going to happen on Monday? I'm thankful that I have two days for it to all blow over, but that doesn't mean people still won't know what's going to happen.

Next, I open up Instagram. There's a bunch of Direct Messages, but I'm only interested in the one from Finn.

I furrow my eyebrows, confused. Why would he want me to call him?

I sigh, and pull up his contact.

"Hi Dani," he picks up after one ring.

"Hey Finn, is everything okay?" I ask. He sounded worried.

"I'm just freaking out. I can't take it anymore," he says quietly, sniffling.

"Wanna talk about it?" I offer. It sounds like he's crying. The poor boy.

"Yeah. I'd like that. Can you come over?"

My eyes widen in shock. Finn wants me to come over?

"Sure. I'll leave now. Text me your address," I say, trying to sound calm.

"Okay. See you soon."
