Chapter Nineteen: Wyatt's Joke

Finn and I have been working hard for the past couple of days to get his house cleaned out for the garage sale. We've developed a system that works for the both of us: Finn would pick me up at my house and we'd go to school. We'd hang out at lunch and breaks. At this point, we're completely used to the staring and the constant remarks and questions have come to a temporary halt. After school, we would drive to his house and continue working on getting the garage sale ready. While he cleaned, I would make us a simple dinner before he would drive me home and go to his night shifts at work.

"How have you been managing lately? With all of your school work and your job and everything," I ask, twirling my fork into leftover pasta from last night.

"Good, I guess. It's all starting to tire me out, I don't know how many more night shifts I can handle," he says before taking a drink from his water bottle.

"I bet. At least tomorrow it'll all be over. The garage sale will go smoothly and then on Sunday you can sleep in," I assure, smiling.

"Fair enough. And I don't have to work," he adds.

"Exactly. See? Things are smoothing over after all of your hard work. You have to work for what you want after all," I smile.

"I know, silly. You tell me every day," he laughs.

"Sorry," I say, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. "I just want the best for you."

"It's okay, don't be sorry! I appreciate it. You're so helpful, and I'm so thankful to have you as a friend," he smiles.

Did I just get friend-zoned?

"Me too," I say, blushing. Suddenly I find my container of pasta very interesting. It's a lot easier to look at than Finn right now.

"Hey, are you okay?" He asks me in his gentle voice that makes my heart melt.

"Oh, yeah. Of course," I fake a smile.

"Okay, but like come on, it's only fair of me to help you after all you've done for me," he smiles, putting his hand on mine, forcing me to look at him.

"Thank you, Finn. But I'm okay," I assure him, feeling guilty for lying.

"Okay," he says, sounding quite unimpressed. "But was it something I said?"

I open my mouth to tell him no, but I'm interrupted when I see Wyatt.

"For fuck's sake," I whisper, rolling my eyes.

"Hey Sweetheart, hey Finn-The-Fuck-Boy," he taunts, pulling up a chair beside me.

"The hell do you want, Wyatt?" Finn asks calmly.

"Oh, not much. Came here to talk. It's getting boring without you in the group Finnie, why don't you just dump her already and come back? Noah says that your little girlfriend here kicked me out of your house and the party was just getting started," He smirks. "I miss you Finn, now you're all lame for some lame schoolgirl."

I roll my eyes.

"I never invited you over anyways though," Finn says casually. "And she's not my girlfriend."

Did he really say I'm not his girlfriend? I mean, technically I'm not. We're nothing more than friends, at least we haven't established anything more than that. Why am I getting so worked up over this? Normally I'd be the one telling people we aren't dating.

"Well, her locker says otherwise," he says with a sickening smile, leaning back into the chair.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I snap, my face turning hot.
