I followed Max down the long hallway we came through after sending a quick text to Simone explaining where I was going. Actually it just said I was going somewhere with Max, being that he insisted on surprising me. But I didn't expect Simone to even realize I was gone until much later anyways, so all was good!
"Can you please just tell me!" I begged as we walked out of the club together, making our way towards the parking lot where Max's car was parked.
Max shook his head, a smile tugging at his lips "What fun would this trip be if I told you all my secrets?"
I rolled my eyes as we approached his car. All his secrets! You would think I was asking him to tell me what the worst thing he's ever done was, not where he was taking me. I mean I just met the kid, he could be a serious psycho! Is it really that outrageous that I would like to know where we were headed before I just agreed to get into his car?
"You could be a killer you know?" I said as I placed my hands on my hips. Refusing to get into the car without him at least giving me some sort of clue to where we were going.
Max nodded "It's true!"
"Or a rapist!" I pointed out, lifting my eyebrows.
"Also true."
"Maybe a kidnapper?"
"I guess that's just a chance you're going to have to take, Hewitt!" Max said as he sat down in the car and strapped himself in "Now get in!"
I started at him in disbelief, did he not just hear everything I said? Ignoring me, he just honked, signaling for me to hurry up. Annoyed I ripped the car door open and plopped into my seat "You better not kill me!"
#####
It wasn't a long drive, fifteen minutes tops. I would know because he didn't kill me, I was alive the entire way there. I mean he wasn't even scary or threatening, just funny and sweet. I mean he was hot too, but I've mentioned that before so...
When we arrived Max jumped out of the car and ran around it to open my door for me. Forgetting to close his own door in the process.
He stuck his hand out, hoping I would take it and he could help me up, but I refused.
"What?" Max said, obviously confused. "Why not?" I guess he's used to dealing with normal girls, the kind who like romance and being wooed. I mean all that stuff is cute in theory but it just makes me cringe. Like hello I'm a girl not a dog, I'm perfectly capable of opening up my own door, thank you very much.
I swung my feet out of the car and pushed my self up with the help of the door. Puposely not taking his hand. When I was standing next to him I lifted myself up onto my tippy toes and whispered into his ear "Nice try, Prince Charming!" before walking away and into the diner we were parked outside of. Talk about cliche.
Max caught up to me pretty quickly. "You wanna, uh, sit or something?" he asked, obviously nervous.
I looked around the cozy diner, it seemed clean enough and it certainly smelled heavenly. "Yeah" I agreed "I'm starved!"
Max smiled before grabbing my wrist and dragging me across the diner to a booth near the back. "I love this place!" he said as he plopped down on the bench across from me and picked up a menu. "I used to come here when I was in town for the summers visiting Hunter and his family! I'm telling you, it was love at first bite!"
I snorted as those words left his mouth "Did you guys ride off into the sunset together?"
Max nodded "On a white horse!"
Our conversation was interrupted when the waitress came over to our booth. She pulled a pen and a pad of paper out from her apron "Can I get you guys anything?"
Max nodded "Two orders of the burger special!"
I looked down at the menu, the burger special consisted of, one burger, one serving of fries, and one serving of onion rings. I probably could've figured that one out without looking at the menu.
The waitress popped her gum as she lifted her pen to the notebook and started to write.
"Uh. No!" I said, she stopped writing.
Max looked at me weirdly "Why not?"
I shrugged "I don't want a burger"
"You're not getting a salad!" he said, his face stern.
I rolled my eyes "I don't want a salad!"
"Then what's wrong with a burger?" he asked
"I don't like burgers!"
After I said that Max just stared at me, like he couldn't believe it. Ignoring him I looked up at the waitress "Can I have the chicken sandwich instead, please?"
She nodded quickly "One burger special, and one chicken sandwich. Anything to drink?"
"Just two waters" I answered for the both of us, Max still hadn't 'recovered'. Poor boy was shocked into silence.
"So, um, let me get this straight!" Max said, the initial shock clearly wearing off "You, don't like burgers?"
"That's what I said, isn't it?"
Max stood up from the table and started towards the door.
"Wait! What? Max, where are you going?" I called after him. He can't just leave me here. We ordered already! Plus I don't have any way of getting home, maybe he is a psycho after all.
Max turned around "I'm sorry Rainie!" he said, he looked hurt "I just can't be friends with someone who doesn't appreciate the gifts god gives us!"
I stared at him shocked, I was kidding about the whole crazy thing, could I have been right? Am I secretly a psychic?
Max walking back towards the table tore me out of my thoughts "And burgers Rainie" he said once he was sitting in front of me again "Is one of gods best gifts!"
#####
"I'm funny!"
"You're an idiot!"
"A funny idiot?"
"A stupid idiot!"
"Aw come on Rainie! You know you love me!"
Now that was funny. Not Max's minor mental break back in the restaurant. That wasn't funny, that was embarrassing!
"Whatever" Max said as he fished through his pockets for his car keys "This was still better then Hunters birthday party."
"Amen to that!" I muttered as I got into the car. "Simone's probably wasted!"
"Yeah, she's..."
"A character?" I asked, helping Max find the appropriate word to explain Simone's bizarre personality.
Max nodded "That's one word for it!"
We sat there in silence, I was looking down at my hands, but I could feel Max's eyes on me. A blush was creeping up my neck. Why wont he look away? Slowly I lifted my head up, my hair slightly blocking my face.
"I like you better though!" He said, finally moving his gaze away from me "You're more... down to earth."
"Thanks" I whispered, scared to say much more. I've never really had a proper relationship before, I don't really know how these things are supposed to work.
But then, just as I was building up the courage to add something cute, say something flirty, everything stopped. The entire picture I had formed in my head came crashing down around me because of one sentence.
"You know, you would get along great with my girlfriend back home!"
