You sat on the desolate stairs, viewing out over the city of Seoul, breathing heavily. It was early morning and you had just finished a quick run, hearing how the city was truly waking up to a sunny Saturday. Just about a week ago you had arrived to the city in order to study as an exchange student, lacking both language skills and cultural knowledge. You felt like that quick "Welcome to South Korea" newbie guide book your mother gave you didn't cover nearly enough, and it was outdated. Sipping from your water bottle you questioned how you had managed to get up this morning, and to go out jogging, for several minutes before you decided to do something with your day. Back in the small dorm you slipped into a light dress to match the summer weather and took up your phone, remembering you still had to get internet connection sorted somehow... The 'No service' symbol made you feel hopelessly lost. Instead you grabbed the newbie guide book and flipped open a random page, the headline reading "The Magical Seoul Forest". With time on your hand, it sounded like a good option. Taking the guide, a water bottle, a map and other necessities you locked the dorm door and headed out into a now awake city. Your neighbour nodded at you quickly before hopping into his car and driving off. They had been surprisingly helpful and welcome to your presence, despite not being able to communicate much. On your way down the road you went through your day plan in your head. First get on the train, then manage to get to the forest, where you'd read a book or draw... Then lunch, and perhaps do some light shopping for things you had realised you were lacking from home. While you were in that part of the city, you figured you might as well take an easy stroll around to feel the atmosphere. After a hectic welcome week to the university, it was nice not having a fixed schedule for once.
The train ride went as expected. It was crowded and warm, but no way as bad as it could be. You were just about to miss your stop as you couldn't hear the train voice, and had to rush out before the doors closed. Walking out from the train and up into the city was like entering a whole different town. Perhaps you took the wrong stop after all..? Realising you had the newbie guide, you took some awkward steps to the side of the pavement to not be in the way, and not be seen with a gigantic map. It felt like a bad travel movie from the 90s as you unfolded the map and tried to decipher where you were. After twenty minutes you had managed to confirm that you did take the wrong stop, and were now hopelessly lost. A desperate feeling began to cling to your chest, eventually having you decide to actually ask a stranger for help. It took longer than expected, as you stood on the side of the pavement trying to decide who to approach, and once you had decided for that person they had already walked past. Finally you spotted two younger men walking down the road up ahead, deciding to stop them and ask for help early. Hopefully they would be able to know English as well.
"Hi, hi sorry for disturbing." You took a gentle step out in front of them with a half folded map in your hand. They stopped and arched their eyebrows at you. They were both tall, one was a bit more tan than the second, who was fair. The first one had coloured grey hair whereas the other one had raven black. The two of them looked between you and the map in your hand for a second, then smiled softly,
"You're not disturbing, can we help you?" One of them asked. You breathed out as he spoke English and didn't tell you off.
"Well, I am lost. Very lost. I think I took the wrong stop... " You then held up the map, feeling you had to explain yourself more, "The map is old and I can't use my phone."
He chuckled slightly and nodded, whilst the other one looked more puzzled, yet his gaze followed you. You felt as if he did his best to understand, or that he was just shy.
"Okay so where do you want to go?" The first one moved up beside you in order to look at the map. His eyebrows furrowed at the sight of it. "Yeah this is old." You felt blood rushing up to your cheeks over the poor map, already feeling like an inconvenience for stopping them.
"I was planning on heading to "The Magical Seoul Forest"..?" You replied with a questioning tone. Both of them looked amused at the sentence, yet you failed to understand why.
"The Magical Seoul Forest, yeah? Let me see here." He continued, leaning in over the map in order to study it. You did your best to follow his gaze but realised there was no point, so you kept the map up and waited. Whilst he studied it, you felt as if you were watched; looking up from the map, your eyes made contact with the silent one. Untamed butterflies burst out through your chest as you stared at each other for several seconds. You realised how handsome he was now that you got to look at him for real. Eventually the both of you smiled widely and looked away in an act of shyness. Like a saviour, the boy to your left pointed on the map,
"Right, so you want to go here, but the way there is a bit complicated since they've rebuilt." His finger moving in some circles on the paper. "So instead of a left here, you take a right. Then you go under a bridge, and from there you want to move across this instead of this. Then instead of following this path here, you should go over-..." His voice trailed off and he furrowed his eyebrows, realising you were already lost. He took a breath before he gently pushed your map down and turned to you, "You'll never make it that way. But we're going more or less that way anyway, so you could simply come along with us?" You felt extremely relieved and nodded, happy you'd not get lost this time. Both of them smiled as you agreed. You folded the map and returned it to the backpack, then began following them as they walked down the road.
"I'm [Y/N] [Y/S] by the way." You said, feeling it was about the right time to at least know your temporary guides.
"Nice to meet you up [Y/S], I'm Kim Nam-Joon." The first one introduced himself as with a wide smile, showing his clear dimples.
"I'm Kim Seokjin." The silent one said shortly. Yet, his smile showed his short reply wasn't due to rudeness, but rather a lacking English.
The two of them moved you to walk in-between them due to the large amounts of people and continued to guide you forwards.
"Happy to meet the both of you. Really. And call me [Y/N]." You laughed slightly, knowing how this day could have ended up otherwise. Seokjin nodded and spoke to Nam-Joon in Korean, having him translate it.
"Jin wonders what brought you to Seoul?" Nam-joon asked, the two of them looking down towards you for an answer whilst also smoothly guiding you forwards through the crowd.
"I'm here as an exchange student. Only been here a week." You explained, "To be honest I know... Very little about South Korea." You felt somewhat guilty saying these words. Who became an exchange student somewhere without doing research first? Nam-joon translated over to korean so Seokjin would understand. He was just about to reply when they both made for a halt and looked up across the street. The two of them looked concerned and began exchanging words quickly in korean. You felt suddenly very stressed at their behaviour. Was there some threat? Were they a threat? Oh my god what if they were kidnappers? What happened next felt like chaos. The people in their vicinity rushed to the sides of the pavement as from across the street came a hoard of screaming girls and boys, clad in matching outfits and phones held high. Like a flash from clear skies, people farther away that looked like paparazzi spotted the crowd, then the crowd's prey. Seokjin looked down on you and grabbed your hand, then with wide eyes said,
"Run."
