CHAPTER 2
"Grace, can you this up for me, please?" I ask.
Grace dutifully heads over to me and ties the ribbon of my dress. "Do mine, too."
After we are done doing each other's costumes, we head over to the mirror to look at ourselves.
The girls are dressed as traditional maids, the ones with frilly white aprons over puffy black dresses whose hair was tied into a neat bun with a frilly white headband to match the apron. The guys are wearing all black with a plain white apron around their waists. We're the waiters for the party and Ma'am Carolyn dressed us as maids and guy-maids (what's the guy version of 'maid'?).
The costumes were cute but they make us look like a bunch of idiots.
We waiters troop to the kitchens that are connected to the ballroom to await our orders.
"What do you think is going on there?" Grace whispers.
I shrug, listening to the loud music playing behind the kitchen doors.
"I'm going down,
I'm yelling timber
You better move,
You better dance..."
"We'll find out," I reply to Grace who is unconsciously swaying to the music.
At that moment, Ma'am Carolyn appears in a long, red gown with a necklace of pearls around her neck.
"Attendance!" She orders.
"Grace Perkins," Grace says loudly.
"Joe Cavalleri."
"Michelle Goldstein."
"Bright Young," I say as loudly as I can, which is to say, soft.
Ma'am Carolyn stares at me for a moment before continuing with the rest of the group.
"Okay," she barks, when Beatrice Chang's finished. "You will do your job well or else..."
She glares at us as if to complete her threat, Or else I will knock out all your teeth and drop you from the top of Mount Everest.
"Go and serve the trays." Without another word, Ma'am Carolyn walks out the door slamming it shut.
I collect a tray of ham and cheese mini sandwich bites then Grace and I head out to the party.
The party is in full swing with already-drunk adults and laughing teens dancing to the music. I spot Sophia chatting with a group of snooty friends in her knee-length blue sparkly dress.
Grace spots her too. "Stuffy," she mutters. She then winks at me and says, "Good luck. Have the sandwiches sold out!"
I smile nervously. "Same with your fries."
Miraculously, the sandwiches are sold out so I head back to the kitchen. I still didn't see Mr. Hot Guy, sad to say.
"Serve the Cokes," A chef says, and I pick up another tray loaded with ice-cold Coca-Cola-filled glasses.
I wander around the party serving Cokes to people when the spotlight suddenly lands on a new-comer.
It's the guy in all his hot glory, looking stunned and a little blinded by the bright spotlight. From here, I could see his messy caramel hair, not exactly blond and not brown either. His dark blue eyes, almost black, are sparkling from the light. He's wearing a sleek tuxedo that suits him perfectly.
"Hi?" He says. Sexy voice. His dimples show when he smile.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" the crowd shouts, drawing nearer to the guy.
Ma'am Carolyn surges forward and hugs him. "Welcome home, Cole!"
Cheers escape from the crowd. Cole, what a nice name.
"Hey, can I have one?" A woman asks, interrupting my perfect staring-at-Cole moment.
"Yes, of course, Ma'am," I reply absentmindedly, handing her a glass.
A finger taps my shoulder from behind.
"Isn't he gorgeous?" Grace gushes with her tray of onion rings.
"Yeah," I agree.
"Hey," a voice sounds beside me.
I carefully turn around or else my tray will spill.
"Can I have one?" Cole grins at my nervousness.
"Y...yeah, s... sure."
I pick a glass and start to give it to him, but my hands are shaking too much.
Before I know it, the glass falls and shatters on the floor. It's contents are now happily settled all over Cole's shirt.
Shoot, Bright, you ruin everything.
As for Cole, he starts to laugh. "It's fine-"
"OH MY GOODNESS, COLE! WHAT'S HAPPENED?"
And there's Ma'am Carolyn about to fire me.
"MISS BRIGHT YOUNG! WHAT A DISGRACE TO MY BUSINESS! TO MY BROTHER!-" Wait, Cole is Ma'am Carolyn's brother? "-YOU ARE F-!"
"Wait, wait, wait," Cole speaks up. "Don't fire her! This is easy to wash off, possibly, so no big deal. EVERYONE DON'T MIND IT! GO BACK TO YOUR OWN BUSINESS, IT'S NOTHING! I HAVE A SPARE TUX IN THE CAR SO NO PROBLEM, GUYS!"
"Cole!"
"Sis, really, it's nothin' so go along, and meditate, yes?" Cole says to his fuming older sister.
When Ma'am Carolyn leaves, Cole turns to me.
"Now you can thank me."
"Th...thanks. And I'm really sorry."
Cole looks down at his ruined tux. "Ironic, isn't it."
"W...why?" I feel like I swallowed a frog.
"Well, the thing that spilled all over me is my name!"
"Your...your name's C...Coke?"
"Yeah. Coke Harrington, at your service. What's your name again?"
"Bright Y...Young."
"Well, see you around, Bright." He waves and disappears into the crowd.
