CHAPTER 6
"We're meeting them outside McDonald's, Coke texted me," I remind Grace who is whining and whining about how long they're taking. Honestly, sometimes I feel more like a big sister than a best friend of Grace. How sad.
"My backpack doesn't get any lighter, doesn't it?" Grace groans, tugging at the straps of her pack, heaving it into a more comfortable position.
"Oh, no, it gets loads and loads lighter the more you carry it," I say sarcastically, rolling my eyes. "They should be here, by now."
After eight long minutes of listening to Grace's loud complaints of heavy backpacks and whatnot, they're still not here.
"Do you see them anywhere?" I say, finally starting to get worried. "They said seven am, now it's seven oh-eight."
What is Coke's playing a prank on me? What if they made a last minute decision to leave us behind? What if-?
"Stuffy's probably curling each strand of her hair right now, then accidentally burned her whole head-accidentally-and had to be shaved bald! That could happen!" Grace grins at the thought.
I wish I could be as optimistic as Grace.
Finally, a bright white Audi Q7 comes into view. Wow, nice car.
The window rolls down, and Coke grins at us. "Hello, Ladies. Hop in!" His eyes are hidden behind a pair of stylish sunglasses. I wish I could see his eyes. I wish he would remove his shades.
Grace and I look at each other and cautiously open the backseat. Squished in are Sophia and Mrs. Gardner. Ma'am Carolyn is in the driver's seat next to Coke.
"Uh, how are we gonna fit there?" Grace asks the question I have in mind.
"You'll fit. Sophia's super thin so four people will fit at the back, okay?" Coke says cheerfully. "Sophia's as thin as half a person."
Grace and I exchange smiles. She climbs in bravely beside Mrs. Gardner, allowing me to be next to the right window. Me and Sophia are at opposite ends of the car. I think Coke planned this, or something to avoid a cat fight. Who can predict guys?
"So this is a two and a half hour drive, ladies... and gentleman, which is me-" I smile weakly at his corny line. "-So sit back, relax, and enjoy my sister's crappy driving!" Coke says happily, earning himself a glare from Ma'am Carolyn. If looks could kill, Coke would have been incinerated on the spot.
Sophia groans at the mention of the ride being two and a half hours. Mrs. Gardner lifts her big, funky, purple and green shades, glances at Coke, and proceeds throwing the shades back on and snoring. Snoring ladylike, of course, but she is still snoring quite loudly. Grace finally, finally, removes her backpack, breathing a sigh of relief. I lean back on the car's comfy leather seats and relax.
Seconds tick away.
Minutes go by.
An hour passes.
Everyone's bored.
"Are we there yet?" Sophia whines like a three year-old.
Nobody doesn't even bother to answer.
Thirty minutes later, everyone is having a snooze fest, except me and Coke, who exchanged places with Ma'am Carolyn fifteen minutes ago so his sister could rest a bit.
Grace is knocked out immediately after I tell her to sleep for a while. I guess she was on guard duty to beat Stuffy up when she comes near me. Sophia fell asleep after counting how many red cars passed by. Ma'am Carolyn collapsed in the passenger's seat in front, and promptly snored. Mrs. Gardner slept the whole time.
"So," Coke says quietly, careful not to wake our sleeping companions. "You wanna play a game?"
"Uh," I say, startled that he addressed me so suddenly. I watch his beautiful fingers tap the steering wheel a few times before saying, "Sure, I guess. What game is it?"
"The Getting-To-Know-You Game. So I ask you any question I want, you answer honestly. Then you do the same and we take turns. Cool?"
I think for a while. I had no intention to answer any of his questions, yet the power of asking him something, and having to answer them honestly was quite tempting. I shrug and try to act nonchalant about the whole thing. "Cool."
"Okay... how old are you?" Coke starts with a simple question.
"I'm eighteen," I say, staring out the window, looking at the passing delivery truck.
"Wow, I'm eighteen, too. Weird how everyone seems to be eighteen. You're turn, m'lady."
"Um..." It has to be a good question. "Have you ever had a girlfriend?" I blurt out. God, I never should have asked that question, that's his own biz, why should I care?
"No," Coke says quickly, looking away. How can a guy, as hot and as perfect as him, have no girlfriend? Miracles, really. "How about you? Did you ever have a boyfriend?"
I scoff mentally at that question. Who in the right mind would want me? "No, too."
Coke looks surprised, for some reason. "Oh. Really? 'Cause I was thinking-"
"Are-we-there-yet?" Sophia says groggily, opening her eyes, her words not as clear as usual.
"Almost. Give it one more hour," Coke says, kind of stiffly, turning the wheel to the right. Maybe he's annoyed that Sophia interrupted him, I dunno.
Sophia's waking up caused a chain reaction because her mother wakes up, and then Grace.
After another hour, we finally reach a sign with the words: SKIPPING STONES RESORT (Beach and resort for people of all ages!), in big, bold letters.
"Sophia? We're here," Coke says, answering Stuffy's annoying question. She didn't need an answer, she could see the sign herself.
