CHAPTER 9

"Here's your vests," Ma'am Carolyn barks at us (Grace and I). She throws them to us and we manage to catch them-barely.

And then the lady has the nerve to sweetly hand over the vests to them (Coke, Sophia, and Mrs. Gardner) and say, "Here you go."

If only I could injure her without getting fired.

Mentally, I'm having a panic attack.

We're riding a stupid inflatable floating banana dragged across the jellyfish infested waters by a jet ski thing-a-ma-bob.

What could go wrong, besides drowning?

How enticing, really, I couldn't wait.

We march to the floating banana, gently bobbing on the blue waves of the ocean. Then we say a quick hello to Pao, the guy riding the jet ski thing. He said the six of us could fit on one banana so he arranged us, Ma'am Carolyn in front then Mrs. Gardner, followed by Sophia, Coke, me, and Grace.

"I don't wanna do this," I whimper softy.

"Of course you do," Coke murmurs back causing me to blush slightly.

We start out slowly enough so I can enjoy the view of the deep blue ocean. It reminds me of Coke's eyes. My feet skims the water and the jet ski leaves white foam trailing behind.

We pick up speed, making the banana boat bounce violently against the waves. Grace let's out a quick shout of joy and turns the opposite way, facing the back. Grace is adventurous.

I wrap my arms and bury my head into the back of the person in front of me.

"Like it here, Bright?"

And I totally forgot that it was Coke. I let go quickly.

"Um, sorry," I say uncomfortably, squinting my eyes because of the glaring sun above.

"No problem," Coke says cheerfully. "I like it like that."

Suddenly the boat gives a sudden lurch and starts rocking vigorously back and forth. Even Grace starts climbing back into a safer position.

"Hold on, guys!" Pao yells. "The banana boat is-!"

Splash!

We scream as we topple off the overturned boat.

This is a nightmare.

"HELP-glub, glub-HELP!" I yell swallowing some water. Yuck.

A pair of arms wraps around me and flops me onto the boat.

"You...you didn't use...use your vest... vest...dumbo," Coke pants, running a hand through his damp hair on the wet boat, innocently floating as if it didn't almost drown me.

"Everyone fine?" Pao shouts.

"Yeah!" we reply, shivering from the water.

"Let's do it again!" Grace says enthusiastically, pumping the air with her fist.

"No thanks," I tell her.

Sophia suddenly emerges to the surface, looking angrily at Coke.

"How come you saved her and not me?" she says in a dangerously soft voice.

"Because I like her."

I climb up the banana quickly, which suddenly turned itself on the right side. "Let's go."

"You what?" Sophia demands as the others climb on top with me.

"If you don't come on, we'll leave you," Coke says nonchalantly.

He likes me. I mean, come on Bright, you know he liked you from the start, possibly. Don't be an idiot...
