CHAPTER 18
Grace emerges from the room after the last bit of screaming.
"We broke up," she informs me. Then she sits on the sofa and puts her head between her knees.
"Oh," I say, shocked. "I'm sorry, Grace."
"It's okay. There's loads of other guys out there," Grace's muffled voice whimpers. "Alex's a stinker, too."
"What?"
"Yeah. He...he cheated on-" She hiccups. "-me t...too."
"What?"
"Amazing, isn't it?" she says, staring at the floor.

Coke
"Man, come on. Help me out!" I demand. Thomas shrugs.
"Why don't you slap Sophia?" he offers. I roll my eyes.
"You're stupid."
"As if I don't know that."
I take out my phone. "I'm calling her."
"Well, that was fast."
I hold my breath as I dial her number. Maybe you've been wondering where I've got it...from Carolyn, her boss. I let out the breath and I look at Thomas as the phone rings. He raises an eyebrow at me.
The ringing stops and her voice floats into my ear.
"Hello, this is Br-wait, who is this? Grace, what the...come here!" There are some tapping sounds and static. The voices become fainter.
"Is it him?" Grace whispers in the background. "Let me get the things."
"Yeah, okay..."
Her voice comes back in full volume. "Coke?" Bright asks.

Bright
"I knew these would come in handy," Grace says, satisfied. She lifts the box in her hands.
"When did you make that?" I stare in amazement at it. A tiny container with the words "What to say in awkward situations". "You know what? Let me end the call first."
"Hello?" His voice. His sexy sexy voice.
"Yeah...um, I'll just call back..."
"Wait, Bri-!" I pull the phone away and press the glowing red button to end the call.
"Hey, look, they have color-coded situations..." Grace motions me with the box to come closer. "And I bought it. I could never come up with this."
I squint at the tiny print on the front of the box. "'An amazing set of mini cards to prompt you and make up for all those uhs, ums, and ers! Includes cards for people with mental problems, for your crush, for break-ups, for peoples with losses'...Grace, this is crazy."
She plucks the box out of my fingers. "Yeah. So what's your situation? Mental, break-up, crush...?"
"What if it's an unofficial break-up with your crush?"
"Hmm. I think there is." She closes her fingers around the edge of a purplish pack. "Yeah, there is. Now call him back," she instructs. "And while you do that, I'll remove the plastic."
I pick up my phone again and redial Coke's number. "Hello?"
"Bright, I need to tell you something."
I frantically gesture to Grace while she is still removing the plastic. "Hurry!" I hiss.
"Here...when your crush needs to tell you something after an unofficial break-up..." She holds the card up. It reads "YOU:YEAH,SURE (nonchalantly)."
"Yeah, sure, non-" I start to say.
"Don't say the one in the parenthesis!" Grace yelps.
"Yeah, sure," I correct myself nonchalantly. Grace flashes me a thumbs up and waits for the next one, fingering the cards.
"I...I need to meet you," Coke croaks. "It's important. It's really important."
I nod at Grace as she flits through the cards. She holds the right one up: "YOU: YEAH, SURE (nonchalantly)."
I roll my eyes and read the card. Then I hear a snorting sound on the other side.
"Toms!" Coke says reproachfully. "Sorry, but, he's asking if you're reading cards."
I groan and snatch the bunch in Grace's hands. And I dump them into the garbage.
"Hey! That was, what, twenty dollars!"
"Useless," I growl.
"I need your real answer, Bright," his voice says with a hint of amusement.
The way he said my name, so much emotion, so much sincerity, so much...need. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy in the inside. It's a strange feeling, the warmth is coming from my chest and it spreads like fire to the rest of my body.
"Yeah," I say, but this time, genuinely. "Sure."
