Chapter 15

Leonora's P.O.V.

I glanced sideways at Helena and wondered how we had ended up like this. Her driving me to some unknown place. Me sitting beside her without struggling, knowing that if I did she'd hurt the people I loved. How did she go from being such a nice big sister to being this.... this monster? She wasn't like this before. I remembered when I was small, she'd be a teenager then, and she'd take care of me while mother was away at her job. She'd even protect me from mother sometimes. It was really nice. We bonded a lot over that time, and she'd show me all these interesting things that left me amazed. Once, she showed me baby foxes.

"Look Leonora! Baby foxes!" The older girl took the younger's hand and made her crouch down beside her, behind a bush. On the other side were the fox parents and their tiny babies, everyone sleeping. They were so cute, they looked like a happy family. Different from theirs, which they had escaped for this precious moment. Moments they didn't have very often. The teenage girl took the 7-year-old in her arms and hugged her tight. "I love you Helena. You're the best big sis ever!"

I smiled at the memory of the foxes. We had watched them sleep and then cuddled some more. When we got home, Helena took the beating in my place, and calmed me at night, when I was shaking under the bed, terrified of mother. Such moments of peace and joy had been so few and far apart that I had grown to cherish them like the biggest treasure ever. They had become some of my best memories, even if they were partly tainted by pain and betrayal.

How dare you be like this?! You're nothing without your family, and yet you betray us like this?! Why can't you be a normal person?? Why do you have to be this monster?? Toys, baby clothes, bottles, pacifiers. You love girls. What else? What did mother do to get you, a stupid excuse of a human? You don't deserve to be alive! I thought that my friends would have taught you a lesson, but apparently no! Monster! Freak!

I closed my eyes, trying to keep my tears from falling. The memories were getting too much, and I felt that my heart was breaking and crumbling into an infinity of pieces, lost forever. I could feel Helena looking at me but I refused to acknowledge her, knowing that if she wanted something she'd tell me. Knowing that if she wanted to hurt me more she would without a moment's hesitation. Because the moment I came out as bisexual, the moment she saw me regressing, I stopped being her sister. I became nothing for her, and would never be anything again. I had let her and our family down, and I was going to pay the price for that now. I'd be married off to some French stranger and would have to fulfill my role as my mother's daughter. I had no choice in this, and I accepted it. Anything to protect those I loved. Anything. Even if it meant giving my freedom and person away.

"Don't cry. You are lucky that he's willing to take you as his wife. He's also giving mother good money."

"How much?" my voice sounded dead.

"2 million. I don't know why, you're nothing but a freak after all, but for us training you a bit and you becoming his wife, he's willing to pay that much. We're not gonna complain."

"Of course you wouldn't...." I opened my eyes and glanced at my sister. It was then that I noticed the ring on her finger. "You're married?"

She smiled. "Yes, I actually am. His name is Wolfgang. He's German-Dutch, and a very important politician in the Netherlands. Very nice too. Mother didn't want money from him though, we married because we loved each other. I'm sure you'd like him."

I probably wouldn't, but I simply nodded, wary of saying something wrong.

I looked outside and thought about what my life was gonna be now.
