Since he couldn't turn onto his side and evade the blinding lights, Todoroki shut his eyes even tighter and groaned. When they had flipped on, Deku seemed to shrink next to him. Todoroki yawned and placed a hand gently in his hair, calming the smaller boy. He purred in response. Todoroki would have smiled if it weren't for his chapped lips.
Once his eyes had adjusted enough, Todoroki peeked through his eyelids into the abysmal world that was his reality. Recovery Girl stood at the foot of his bed, scribbling on a clipboard. Todoroki made a mental note to learn the language that was doctor's handwriting, as it would probably be important considering how much he had gotten hurt lately.
Now that he thought about it, he got hurt once he started hanging around Deku...
He shrugged it off. As long as Deku was somewhat okay with the fact that Todoroki was in the hospital more often than not, he didn't really consider it an issue worth his time.
Recovery Girl finished whatever she was writing and sighed. "Your ribs were broken... obviously. It will take longer to heal since they were barely healed in the first place, and you all are getting hurt too much, and I can't strain myself tryin' to patch you up just for you all to go get hurt again." Recovery Girl complained. Her tone was annoyed, but she didn't raise her voice, not with Deku still sleeping soundly next to him. She didn't seem to mind his prescence, or the fact that he was probably missing the second day of he competition. It was rather odd.
After giving Todoroki his breakfast and a deck of Go Fish cards, Recovery Girl left. Todoroki wasn't hungry; and besides, he couldn't move either of his arms even if he wanted to eat. If he moved his right, it would just make the needles embedded in his arm start to hurt. But if he moved his left, he would have to take his hand off of his cute little Deku.
Recovery Girl had been gracious enough to dim the lights slightly. This, Todoroki was graceful for. It meant that Deku wouldn't be waking up anytime soon, and Todoroki could get more much needed sleep.
For the next few hours, Todoroki drifted in and out of sleep. It was the kind of sleep where he would wake up thinking he was in a surreal dream, just to fall asleep again and forget the dream altogether when he woke up. He had never fully understood sleep cycles in biology class, probably due to forced training hours in the middle of the night that threw his internal clock for a loop.
He finally woke up to the sound of thundering feet in the hallway outside the door. The noise must have been pretty loud, because it rang in his ears even when he was still half asleep. He realized something was wrong when the commotion woke up Deku as well, who groggily sat up next to him, eyes still closed. Somehow, he still managed to look annoyed. Anything powerful enough to wake up Deku was something worth checking out.
To his dismay, Todoroki had no time to admire Midoriya's adorable bedhead hair or stare at the way his cheeks puffed out when he first woke up. He forced himself to look away from his absolutely stunning face and instead peer out the small window next to the door. It was still difficult to see anything from across the room.
With his left hand, he pulled Deku as close as possible. The boy only pulled the blankets farther over him as a result, muttering under his breath. Todoroki speculated that he just wanted to sleep here with him and evidently didn't give two shits about anything else.
Todoroki, in the other hand, was restless. He wanted to be out there. He wanted to do something. He had been cooped up in this small cell for what felt like forever, and it was eating him up.
Most of the noise had stopped, but people were still running in the hallway. Todoroki turned back to Deku, who had nuzzled his face into his side as if that would make it all go away.
When screams could be heard a few doors down, Todoroki knew it would not go away anytime soon.
Every time a high pitched scream resounded, Deku seemed to shrink a little smalller and shudder a little harder. Todoroki hated the fact that the most he could do was pull him close.

By the time Recovery Girl entered the room, Deku was wide awake. In fear or annoyance, Todoroki could not tell. Deku had given up on trying to sleep, as did himself. They sat huddled together in comfortable silence, with Todoroki's chin resting upon Deku's head. The smaller boy's gaze seemed to be fixed on one spot in the bedsheets, as if he was spaced out. The two had barely spoken all day, save for a few "I love you"s and "Are you okay?"
Recovery Girl looked like she had trouble keeping her eyes open as she plopped down on the foot of the hospital bed. Deku moves his head slightly to look at her, but he still showed no sign of emotion. Just... emptiness. So much to the point that it made Todoroki nervous. Distant screams still rang in their ears, but they had gotten used to it by now. It was all just background noise at this point.
Recovery Girl finally spoke.
"I need you two to see our little... situation."
Todoroki started.
Us?
Why?
Deku hadn't moved, but his eyes were wide and his lips slightly parted in surprise. Slowly, he crawled out of the bed. Todoroki used his now free hand to toss the blankets off. Recovery Girl effortlessly pulled the IV out of his arm and placed an All Might themed Band-Aid on it.
The walk to the room with he screaming person was a long one. They didn't cease, but instead, got louder as they reached the end of the hallway. They had put them in the room farthest away from everyone else in the building.
They reached the end of the hall after what felt like forever. Deku, who was holding Todoroki's hand, squeezed it in what seemed like fear. His grip on the smaller boy's soft skin tightened.
The door opened.
Chained to the center of the floor, blood dripping from cuts and gashes, her body flailing widely on the floor, was none other than Ochako Uraraka.
Her bloodshot eyes locked on to Deku's shaking body. He quivered all over and was now practically hanging onto Todoroki's arm for dear life.
It was as if she was possessed. Her hair hung around her delicate features. She stopped thrashing and screaming for a single moment as she absorbed the fact that Todoroki was also in the doorway.
And she lunged.
