Allagash, Maine -10:58 PM-

A soft flurry of rain pattered on the truck as it rolled down a gravelly dirt road. Even with the windows rolled up, the noise of small stones and packed dirt crunching under the wheels of the truck could be heard.

Dim, yellow headlights luminated the path ahead of it. The forest under a black, slumber spell. But inside the cabin, everything was awake and bright.

"Holy shit, that actually happened?" Val chortled.

"Yup, and my granddaddy was in the hospital for about two months." Raileigh said with brazen assurance.

"Jeez, with all the stories you've told me, I'm surprised your grandpa isn't dead yet." The two girls burst into laughter.

Val was wheezing and trying to keep her eyes on the road. Her grip on the wheel tightened. A blatant smile covered her face. But the only reason why she was laughing was because of Raileigh. Meanwhile, with Raileigh still being drunk, cocked her head back and made an obnoxious cackle and started slapping her knee. She rocked back and forth, her body convulsing with laughter. Her outrage doubled over and started to turn into coughs and choking, trying to regain her breath.

"Whoa, calm down before you cough out a lung." Val mocked and took a glance at Raileigh.

"Just worry about the road," Raileigh said through fits of coughs, "This part of it is sketchy. With the forest and stuff." She said through slurred words.

"Alright." Scoffed Val.

Raileigh sank back into her seat, but she wasn't finished yet. Her drooped eyes wandered to the beaten and scratched radio. The music that flowed out from it made her wrinkle her nose in distaste.

"How 'bout we get rid of this crap music?" Raileigh leaned forward to the glove box. She pulled the small knob that locked it and started to rummage around cluttered CD's.

"Crap music?" Val said offended, "Excuse you, but this band has won two awards and were one of the top bands of the 90's. Your parents grew up listening to this music. And you know what they say, never can go wrong..." Val's words drifted off her lips as she gazed out of the windshield.

"What? Never can go wrong with what?" Raileigh sneer, "See, never start to say some smart ass thing unless you're gonna finish it."

"Raileigh, shut up! There's a tree in the road." Val barked at Raileigh.

Val slowed the truck to a stop. The headlight Illuminated several trees snapped in half and shredded across the dirt road. Leaves and branches stuck to the soggy mud. Any small branches that were connected softly swished and swinged in the cool wind. Raileigh looked up from the glove box and stared at the obstacle in the road.

"Well damn, what paraded through here?"

"A bear maybe?" Val suggested.

"No fuckin' way a bear did that. Looks like a storm only went through there." Raileigh motions towards the path of trees that were knocked over.

"But there was no storm last night, or any last week." Val twisted the key out of the ignition and dropped it into her coat pocket. The low hum of the truck faded away. Her hand turned the knob for the headlights to stay on as the truck turned off. Raileigh furrowed her brows at her.

"What are you doing?"

"Gotta move the trees," she pulled her coat's hood over her head and stretched her hand under her seat to grab a flashlight, "You stay in here and watch my back in case there's any bears." Val opened the door of the truck to the night rain and stepped out.
