Allagash, Maine -3:41 PM-
Val's truck screeched into the parking lot of the town's high school. She found Kasey sat at the steps to the school, he glared at her with a scowl while she pulled in. He was a short, spindly kid, his dirty blonde hair spiked up to make him look taller. He hauled himself up and stomped over to the passenger side of the truck. Val sighed, mentally preparing herself for his whining.
"I thought my mom was gonna pick me up—what the hell took you so long?" Chided Kasey as hopped in and he threw his backpack at his feet.
"It was just an hour, calm down. I was busy." Val retorted. She drove off once Kasey slammed his door behind him.
"Doing what? Just sitting at home all day?" Said Kasey.
Val ignored the sting in her chest at hearing that. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. "No, I was out with a friend."
"I thought you didn't have friends." Said Kasey in a teasing, baffled manner.
Val groaned, "Raileigh! Don't you remember her? She came over for your birthday that one time."
Kasey let out a long 'oh'. "The cute chick! To be honest, I thought she was just paid to be there."
"You're gross, she's like 5 years older than you."
They let the music from the radio consume the cabin as Val drove down the familiar curving roads back home. It was occasionally interrupted by small talk about each other's day. When Kasey asked Val, she would easily lie that they were doing something inconspicuous. He would just shrug and continue absentmindedly staring out the window.
As Val was driving, she noticed the striking black and white colors of a police car behind her in the rear view mirror.
"Shit," she lightly pressed on the brakes to slow down. She was going well over the speed limit to equate to a speeding ticket.
"His siren's aren't on." Kasey noticed the cop.
"He can still ticket me if he wants." Val's anxiety began to rise.
Fortunately, the cop was probably feeling nice that day and smoothly passed her. Val's worries began to fade. As the cop passed her left, she was planning to give the cop an apologetic look, but was surprised to find the windows were completely tinted black and the car was a newer model. It looked so new and shiny compared to the dingy, old cars that was usually used by cops in town.
"I don't think that cop is even from this county. That's probably why he just passed us." Said Val.
"Whoa! Look at the car behind it!" Kasey exclaimed, twisted in his seat to look out the rear window.
Val's eyes flicked to her mirrors. She could hear the car approaching before she saw it. A blue and yellow striped sports car was roaring down the road behind her. It was sleek and had a slopping silhouette. He hugged the asphalt as it skirted to the next lane to past Val's truck. If it wasn't obnoxious enough, she noticed number '7' decals on the doors and a high spoiler in the back. It just screamed the person inside had tons of cash. She chewed the inside of her cheek as she gazed at the car, she'd never understand why people liked such showy cars.
"That car looks sick, you never see cars like those around here! It makes your truck look ancient." Kasey said offhandedly as he leaned into Val's side to get a closer look at the sports car. He was getting much too close for her taste.
"Dude, back up! You're way too close!" Val yelled.
Kasey grumbled as he fell back into his seat, "Ugh, fine. So sensitive. I bet it'd probably beat you in a race."
