Chapter One

It's been seven years since my friend, Lilah, moved away. Lilah was my best friend and next door neighbor. We grew up together. That is until my seventh birthday came around.

I remember it like it was yesterday. The day after my party, I walked next door to her house to give her parents a thank you card. But when I knocked on the front door nobody answered. I went back into my house and called to see if they were home. About five calls later still no answer. By that time it was one in the afternoon. Again, I walked next door to check if they were home. One knock. Two knocks. Three. Still nothing. I plopped down on their front steps and sighed. Two hours later, still no sign of her or her family. That's when my parents came to get me. They said they needed to talk to me about something important. My mom's eyes were watery and her face was red and puffy looking. That's when I found out I could no longer see my best friend.

My parents sat me down at the wooden dining table. My mom was crying too much to even explain to me what was going on. I was so confused. So my dad tried to tell me in a sincere way that Lilah's parents died in a severe car accident this morning but he wasn't that great with sad stuff. Lilah was the only one to survive it but from now on she was going to live in Hawaii with her grandma. I started to cry. I was so furious I couldn't help but throw my fists into my fathers chest. Sobbing so loudly with my mom and my dad only there to hug and comfort us. I practically cried myself to sleep almost every night. My mood changed from always happy to hardly ever seeing a smile on my face. Birthdays aren't the same, it's just a reminder of what happened the next morning.

My dad would always say "She'll come back, how could she forget you?" He has said that so much that it has no meaning to it anymore. I've lost all hope. She's never coming back.
