"Mom, I'm okay," I spoke into my phone as I tried to reassure my mother. I had just parked my car in the junior parking lot of my new boarding school. It was a Saturday afternoon in November and I was completely out of my element. Before today I had been floating around a bunch of public high schools in the Richmond area. I was never able to fit in because I was just seen as too different. My parents and I made the decision a few weeks ago for me to come here to Miami and attend boarding school.
"B-"
"Mom, I'll call you when I get settled in. I gotta go find the office. I love you." I hung up quickly before the tears set in. I removed my suitcase and duffle bag from my trunk and locked my car. I stood in the courtyard for what felt like ever just staring.
"Hi! Do you need help!?" A beautiful girl wearing a sleeved black dress with a floral design around her collarbone beamed at me.
"Um, hi. I'm kind of lost. I'm new and today's my first day."
"Charli, right?"
"Yes."
"Hi, I'm Alissa. They told us about you last week." She said smiling.
"Do you think you could show me the office? I don't know what room I'm in."
"Sure, I can take you right now." She took my duffle bag from me and quickly walked in a direction unknown to me. I followed her closely afraid I would get lost. There weren't many people out right now, but the campus was still massive. Soon we arrived at a semi-large building near the far end of campus. She held the door for me as we entered.
"Thank you." She looked at me and smiled. For some reason, her smile gave me butterflies. What the hell was this?
"Hey Mrs. Q, this is our new student Charli, can you help her out."
"Good afternoon Alissa. Welcome to our great school Charli. Here's your schedule, your dorm key, your dorm building key, and your meal card. You are in Fenton Hall in Room 101. Alissa, can you show her?"
"Of course Mrs. Q." We walked out of the office and headed west of the building. "You're in luck, my best friend is your roommate" She smirked like she knew something I didn't. Quickly we made it to my room and I turned the key. I entered the room putting my suitcase on the empty bed and Alissa put my duffle bag on it. I turned to find a tall looking dark-skinned boy lounging on the bed across from mine.
"Um, hi?"
"Charli, meet your roommate Tristan. Tris, meet the new girl Charli." Alissa smiled looking back and forth between us. Roommate!?
