** trigger warning ** - mention of self-harm
"Bri, I just told my mom you were my girlfriend!" I was pacing back and forth in my bedroom while speaking to Briana on the phone.
"What did she say?"
"Um, well I kinda ran out of the room."
"Why?"
"It's embarrassing."
"Tell me. I promise that I won't laugh at you."
"You're the first girl I have introduced as my girlfriend."
"I am?"
"Yeah, I mean I dated a bit when I was in the eighth and ninth grade but they were all bicurious girls who weren't actually into me. Now while I don't have a problem with bicurious girls I had an issue with them not being upfront with their intentions. If they had just told me they weren't sure how they felt about dating girls from the beginning then I -"
"Charli you're rambling."
"Shit, um. I'm just really nervous."
"Why are you nervous?"
"Because I really like you and I want my mom to see that."
"Well, we didn't really start off on a good foot."
"I'm sorry, okay? How many times do I have to apologize!?"
"I'll call you back in a bit Charli."
"Briana. I'm sorry."
"I know." She hung up the phone. Damn it. I threw my phone onto my bed. Why can't I get any of this shit right? I'm always messing up. I could tell I really hurt Briana. I sulked down the stairs to the kitchen where my mom was still standing. I angrily threw the refrigerator open and scanned the shelves for something to eat.
"Charli, what is wrong with you?"
"I don't wanna talk about it." Unsatisfied with the kitchen I went back upstairs and flopped on my bed. I threw a tennis ball up and down towards the ceiling in deep thought. I was feeling really sad so I drifted off. I woke up to my phone's sudden ringing.
"Charli!" I heard Alissa's voice scream through my phone's speakers.
"Yes, Alissa?" I said in what very well may be the saddest voice ever. Sleeping for three hours hasn't shaken off my depressed state.
"What's happened?" The excitement in her voice immediately subsided when she heard the sadness in mine.
"I think I fucked up big time."
"What happened?" After letting out a huge sigh I told Alissa the story.
"What the hell? Why didn't you tell me that you and Briana were together?"
"Really Alissa, that's all you got from this story? I am pour-"
"Okay, okay Charli I'm gonna help you I promise. Just open your door first."
"Huh?" I walked downstairs and opened my door.
"Charli, where are you going?" My mom asked me with a confused expression on her face. When I opened the door, there stood my new best friend at the end of the drive. I dropped my phone onto the carpet and stood with my mouth agape.
"Alissa!!"
"Come here you dope!" We ran to each other meeting in the middle of the driveway. We embraced each other as though one of us had come back from war. When we finally pulled apart, I looked at her as though she had two heads.
