|Chapter: 9|
Last night after Nickel brought me inside my house, he put me down on the couch and covered me with the blanket. I wanted to look after his wounds but he didn't let me, making sure that he'll do it himself.
He went inside my common bathroom as I waited for him on the couch. Later he returned, his wounds completely cleaned and a wet cloth in his hand. He cleaned my neck and my face with that, and surprisingly he was so soft and gentle like he was scared to hurt me. "Don't worry he will pay for what he did", he gritted out. "He fucking will." And that sounded like a promise to me.
I was too stunned to say anything in reply. He sighed and helped me lay back on the couch. Then he sat down on the floor resting his head on the couch which was touching mine. There was a complete silence between us and I drifted off knowing that he'll be here and protect me. I don't know how that thought even came to my mind but, I felt protected with him. In that moment I forgot we were not alone, but I didn't care about the twins sleeping upstairs even when I realised.
For the first time, I was not scared of him instead there was a different kind of warmth feeling when he was near me. I woke up in the morning with Sarah poking my forehead, while I was laying on the couch. But he was gone.
"You sleepy head, since when do you sleep walk?", Sarah asked, coming out of the kitchen with two packed lunches. I scratched the back of my neck sheepishly, thinking of a proper lie for now. Later, I'll tell her everything when we are alone.
"I was thirsty so I came, but then I was dizzy so I decided to sleep on the couch", I said taking my lunch from her and put it in my bag.
"How do you feel? Are you sure you want to come school?", Salvor asked, clearly concerned as he put his shoes on.
"Yes, I feel better and I'll be fine", I smiled at him. Instead I could have just crawled into my bed and slept for the whole day, I decided to go school. I was not the kind of person to miss school.
First, I don't want to sulk myself into this empty house and second, I need to tell Sarah everything that happened last night and take it off my chest.
"Cool, but you stay either with me or Sarah. Never alone, do you get that?" He raised his eyebrows at me, looking as serious as ever.
"Yes, Sir", I saluted him, and he only shook his head smiling at me.
Salvor collected his car keys and we headed out together before I locked my front door and throw my keys inside my backpack.
I walked down my porch and whip my head towards his driveway to see his car which meant he didn't leave for school yet. Will he even go toady? What if he is not feeling well? I don't want to admit but I was a little disappointed when I woke up to only see him gone. I wanted to thank him for being with me last night. I wonder if we'll talk again.
Sarah snapped her fingers in my face. "What are you looking for?"
"Nothing, let's go", I pulled her with me.
I should stop because he means nothing to me.
.
"I know you're a dummy, but I didn't expect you to be this dummier", she stood up, fustrated just after I finished telling her the last night event. "I want to kill you. How could you be so careless?", she yelled. Almost, the whole cafeteria were now looking at us.
"Please calm down", I whispered, signaling with my hand to stop her. "I'm not hurt at all, I swear."
"But they almost.. God! I don't even want to think about what'd have.. how can you not ask for help? We were sleeping in peace while you were there.. don't you understand how dangerous that is? What if they didn't..", she rambled on.
"I know, I'm sorry", I played with my fingers under the table.
"Sorry? Are we really bestfriends if we don't rely on each other?", she asked suddenly looking sad. "Are you sure you're alright? And not frightened?" When I met her brown doe eyes, I realised she was at the verge of crying.
"Don't worry, I just need some time to..", I couldn't finish saying when she suddenly pulled me in for a hug. Tightly, I grabbed her sweater. "I feel a lot better after sharing with you", I told her truthfully.
I wanted to share with Salvor too. But after knowing how he would actually react somehow stopped me. One twin was enough for this.
"I'm always with you dummy." She pulled away from me, holding my arms. "Do you have any idea who those guys were and why they were there? I mean what if they come back?"
"No. The only thing I heard was one of the guy telling Nickel not to turn against them and that was a deal. Other than that I have no idea", I answered.
She was right. What if they come back? They surely didn't look like any normal people but dangerous. The kind people who get there revenge no matter how. I don't want Nickel to get hurt. Wait what? From when did I started caring if he gets hurt or not. These are probably one of his past mistakes that he's paying off and now I'm dragged in it too.
This town managed to give me another reason to dislike it and more reasons to get out of here. And the reminder how Mrs. Gibbon turned her back on us, was like the last blow. They are all heartless and dark just like the place.
"Just remember you're not alone this time", she reassured me. "And you thought you're some kind of superhero to fight against the bad guys all alone, you think very highly of yourself."
"Stop making fun of me", I slapped her forehead.
Sarah and I talked for some more until I calmed her down to not worry about me and then headed to our classes. She was worried about me, than I myself was.
The day went as slow as possible. I was surely in the class by body, but my mind kept drifting to so many things. What couldn't have a normal high school life?
I was standing near my locker after the last class as some students passed yelling that the day finally is over. After putting all my belongings inside my locker and taking all the necessary things back, I turn to leave and started to walk down the hall.
I saw Nickel with his group of friends and some girls near his locker as he leaned on it. His eyes met mine and my steps slowed down like always under his gaze. Even after getting beaten up from last night and with all the scars, he managed to look handsome. Dashing and the bad boy look never leaving his face.
Not able to bear his stare anymore, I bowed my head hiding my face behind my blonde hair locks.
"Hey isn't she the girl you saved last night and carried her home?", one guy asked from the same group pointing his finger to me as I passing them. But I froze. Right on the spot.
"Lucky bitch", one of girl with tight red dress murmured while others standing near her scowl at me. I don't know how getting assaulted considered as a lucky thing.
"Yeah. Too blunt for your taste Black. Not at all your type", another guy as I can recognise from last night that came with Zac said hitting Nickel on his chest. I swallowed a lump down my throat. Why the hell am I not moving? Say something Nickel, I hoped.
"I was drunk so I had no idea what I was doing. She ain't any special", as the words left Nickel's mouth, I felt an unfamiliar pang inside my chest.
I don't know what are these feelings, but that sure did hurt me. The coldness in his voice, made me weak inside and out. My eyes started to get teary. I got my senses back and restrained myself before rushing out that place as one of them yelled, "The girl next door." And others burst out laughing. I ran till their laughs faded away. I got inside my car and drove away.
Crying and rubbing my eyes from time to time during the ride, I finally reached my house. Wishing I could ran away from this place already, I unlocked my door and again I was welcomed by the emptiness.
