Swamps were usually considered a dangerous place. One wrong step and your feet would get stuck in the thick mud. Along with the population of alligators in the area every journey would have a 50/50 chance of failure.
But yet your clever mind saved you every time. A way to walk through the swamps without getting stuck, areas to get high enough away from alligators if they attack. But the wildlife never bothered you. Sometimes you just sat in the swaps studying the alligators. Like you were today.
You were sat down on a stump watching a alligator you had called Autumn on the account of its brownish and greenie scales.
"I'm sorry I couldn't bring more" You apologised, opening a bloody sack. The alligator hissed in interest as you pulled out a dead white chicken, one you had taken from your farm. Though your father wouldn't noticed. He didn't even realise you were gone half the time. You stood on the stump and stretched your arm out as far as you could, dangling the chicken by its foot. The alligator slowly crept forward before launching itself into the air, grasping the chicken in its jaws.
"What are you doing?" Someone asked behind you. The alligator hissed and slithered back into the water as you turned around. A boy, maybe a few years older than you, with dirty blonde hair and fancy clothes stood with a confused look on his face.
"Nothing" you answered, tossing away the bloody sack.
"You do know alligators are dangerous" he said, eyes scanning the water behind you.
"I don't mind them" you shrugged "and they don't seem to mind me".
"What's you name?" He asked.
"I'm (Y/N)" you smiled "What's yours?".
"Jojen, Jojen Reed" he replied, making your eyes grow.
"You're Lord Reed's son!" You gasped, bowing your head down.
"You don't need to that" he smiled only for it to fall when he noticed a alligators head pop out of the water "Can we go somewhere else?".
Glancing behind you, you saw the alligator but this wasn't the one you had just fed. This one was notorious in the swamps, constantly attacking the other alligators; it's snout littered with scars from previous fights with one white eye. You gestured to a tree and started to climb up it, Jojen following and matching where you placed your feet.
When you reached a height you sat out on a branch, Jojen sitting beside you, looking down to watch the water below. One slip and you would fall in. That's probably why Jojen remained close to the trunk of the tree.
"Not used to bring out in the swamps?" You asked, swinging your legs back and forth.
"My father doesn't exactly like me being out here but he gives me and my sister some freedom" Jojen shrugged "What about your father?".
"He doesn't know I'm gone most of the time" you sighed "He tends to the himself or goes off with women. I have to do the work most off the time".
"Sounds like you could use a friend" he smiled. You looked up at him, seeing no lie in his eyes. A small smile dawned on your face.
"I could".
Though that was years ago. After your first meeting with Jojen you became close friends. Almost everyday you would see each other, sometimes you would play others he would actually help you with some of the work.
Until one day it stopped. You waited as usual but he never arrived. You only assumed he must've had responsibilities with his father that day but the next day was the same. And the next. In the end you stopped waiting for him. After that your father passed away, killed from wounds he took in a tavern fight. Apparently they were fighting over a whore who looked like the queen. Both men came out badly but your father died all because he wouldn't get his wounds treated. Soon the chicken farm failed, some raiders took your home but you managed to escape.
Now a young lady you had been living rough. Inns, abandoned homes or forest floors. It didn't matter anymore.
With a bow over your shoulder and a rabbit dangling by its feet in your hand, you trotted back to your camp. Whistling a tune as you walked off the path soon shifting your voice.
"From there to here, from here to there, all black and brown and covered in hair. He smelled that girl in summer air. The bear, the bear and maiden fair" You sung to yourself, walking into your camp. Setting the dead creature down, you pulled out a flint and started to strike the fire you made before you left, still singing "The bear, the bear and the maiden fai-".
"(Y/N)?" Someone spoke behind you. Turning your head, your eyes widened at the young man standing before you. Eyes big and mouth agape you turned, moving to your feet.
"Jojen?" You said, squinting your eyes at him. He said nothing but smiled lightly and nodded "What in Seven Hells are you doing here?".
"Meera, there is no need" Jojen calmly ordered. Whipping your head around you saw his sister, wild brown hair and keen eyes aiming an arrow at you. She lowered it and held it to her side.
"Does your father know you're out here?" You asked, turning back to the male Reed.
"He does" he nodded.
"But he let us go" Meera added.
"Why?".
"We need to go north" Jojen answered.
You looked him up and down "you can sit if you want". Jojen and Meera sat down side by side as you sat opposite them, striking the flint until the spark started a fire. The two were silent as they watched you skin the rabbit, gut it and skewered it onto a stick to cook over the fire. "So, why do you want to go north?" You questioned, wiping the blood from your hands with a rag.
"Brandon Stark" Jojen informed, making you glance up.
"Ned Stark's son?" You responded confused.
"We need to talk to him, help Bran get to him" Meera explained, pulling out her arrows and started to sharpen the ends.
"Get to who?" You spoke, turning the rabbit on the fire.
"The Three Eyed Raven" Jojen answered.
"The Three Eyed what?" You said astonished.
"Raven. He's beyond the Wall, Bran needs to meet him" Jojen added.
"How do you know this?" You replied.
"I have the Sight" Jojen said looking at you. When he noticed your confused face he decided to continue "I can see things that haven't happened".
"Seven Hells!" You huffed, looking down at the dirt. Your eyes snapped up back at them "You'll need help".
"We can't ask you that, (Y/N)" Meera said, shaking her head.
"You're going beyond the Wall and there's a lot of wildlings between here, there and beyond" you glared "Wildlings took my farm, would've killed me if they found me there. I know how to kill, I've been doing it for ages".
"Are you sure?" Jojen said, looking deeply at you. Your glare soon turned into a smile.
"Of course" you grinned "Sounds like you could use a friend".
