The Curupira is a mythological creature pertaining to the Brazilian folklore. It has many features of West African as well as European fairies, and people consider it to be a demonic entity. Its name comes from the Tupi word kuru'pir, which means "covered in blisters". Long before colonizers arrived, the natives used to tell stories about this fantastic beast which lived in the forest.

According to some legends, Curupira has brightly red colored hair and it has the resemblance of a man or a dwarf. One interesting and distinctive feature of the creature is its feet, which are facing backwards. It uses them to create footprints that lead to the starting point, therefore misleading hunters and travelers. In addition to this, it can also create illusions and produce a whistling sound that drives others mad. His whistling can imitate various sounds from nature, further tricking travelers and making them get lost in the forest.

Curupira preys on poachers and hunters who take more than they need from the forest. It also attacks people who harm animals that have offsprings. As with any legend and folk tale, there are more variations of this tale. They have to do with the creature's appearance and habits, usually. In spite of this, the Curupira is a nationwide folkloric figure.

There are also various powers attributed to it. These include: super speed, transmutation, incredible strength and the ability to cast illusions. Among all of these variations there is only one consensus: it is the protector of the flora and fauna in Brazil. This entity is fair and brave, punishing only those that bring harm on innocent animals. He can help people in need if he so desires.

The Curupira is a beloved figure in the Brazilian culture, and it is useful when it comes to raising awareness on protecting nature.
