The Dullahan is a headless rider who sits on a black horse. Whether male or female, the rider carries his or her head in a satchel or out in front of them like a lantern. The head has skin the texture of moldy cheese and its mouth stretches from ear to ear in a repugnant grin. Its beady black eyes dart from side to side and possess supernatural sight. When the head is held upward, it can see vast distances searching for dying souls in the night.

Those who see the Dullahan as it passes are doused with a bucket of blood or their eyes are struck blind by a whip made of human spinal cord.

In some variations the Dullahan sits on a carriage is adorned with funeral objects and it's pulled by six black horses. All gates and locks open to them when they approach, the only reported way to stop a Dullahan is to set gold in its path.

When the Dullahan finds its victim the horse will stop in the doorway and the Dullahan's head will call out the name of the person whose death it heralds. It is said the soul of that individual will be called forth at the sound of their name.
