Melusine is a half-fay, daughter of Pressyne a water-nymph and Elynas, King of Albany. Melusine was cursed by her mother to have a fish's body from the waist down on Saturday.

King Elynas went hunting one day and found Pressyne who was very beautiful in the Forest. Elynas persuaded her to marry him. Pressyne agreed as long he did not enter her chamber when she birthed children or bathed them. For a promise must be made when a mortal and a fay are paired. Pressyne soon gave birth to triplets and Elynas broke the promise. Pressyne immediately left to the Isle of Avalon. The triplets grew up in Avalon and on their fifteenth birthday Melusine, the eldest asked why they had been taken to Avalon. Upon hearing of their father's betrayal they sought revenge. The sisters trapped Elynas in a mountain with all his riches.

Pressyne became enraged when she heard what they had done and punished them. Melusine was cursed to take the form of a serpent waist down every Saturday. Melusine left for a Forest in Poitou and there her future husband Raymond de Poitou found her. Raymond proposed and she accepted with one condition that he was to never go into her chamber on Saturday. Raymond broke the promise and saw her with the curse. Melusine forgave Raymond. One day they had a disagreement and Raymond called her a serpent in front of the court. Melusine changed into a dragon gave him two magic rings and flew off. Raymond never saw her again.
