What Did I Do?

The next morning, Wayne and I showered and put on fresh clothes before going downstairs to eat breakfast. When we finally got downstairs, we said our good mornings to the family. Everyone was there except Victoria and Elijah (one of Wayne's brothers).

"Where's Vic and Eli?" Wayne asked his Mom while beginning to take out some dishes from the cabinet so that he could start setting up the table.

"I'm not sure, honey. I know they were here last night. Maybe they went to go get something." She replied, rinsing off a pot before putting it on the stove. She was about to start cooking breakfast.

I decided to not say anything about knowing that Eli and Victoria were up in the middle of the night. I didn't know that they had left the house, but that just made me wonder even more about them.

I helped Wayne set up the table. The rest of his siblings, Jaqueline, Derek, and Shyanne, were beginning to come downstairs for breakfast also. None of Wayne's siblings had children yet, though most of them were married. Victoria, the oldest, was the only single one. Maybe she was just a bitter woman because she can't find love.

Once the table was set and Wayne's mother was finished cooking breakfast, we all sat down at the dining room table.

"We're starting before they come back?" Jackie asked.

"Did anyone call them, to see where they were?" Wayne's mom asked.

"I called Eli. He said that Vic and him are on their way." Derek said.

"I guess we'll wait then," Wayne's mom replied.

About twenty minutes later, Eli and Vic finally came back. They apologized for not being here earlier and sat down at the table to eat breakfast.

As we ate, everyone had small chatter. Eli and Vic conversed, Jackie with Derek, and Shyanne conversed with her parents. Wayne decided to keep me company.

"So how do you like the fam?" He asked.

"They're very welcoming. For the most part," I muttered the last part.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing, I just feel like some of the family is more welcoming than others,"

"Who's not?"

"I don't want to talk about it at this time,"

"Alright then. I'm done with the album. All I have to do is review it one more time and then publish it," Wayne switched the subject.

"That's great." I said as soon as my phone buzzed. I wanted to dismiss it, but it was from my dad.

He never contacted me unless it was extremely important because he claimed that he was always busy from work.

I excused myself from the table and went into a quieter room.

"Hey, you called?"

"Yeah, I need to talk to you,"

"What about? Are you okay? You sound different" I asked a little scared. My dad sounded very different. I didn't know what it was, but I was going to find out.

"Nicki, I've been diagnosed with lung cancer. For now, I'll be okay. However, I am dying. I need someone to take over the company though. I was thinking that maybe you could get Wayne's father to run it. I wanted you to tell him, because as you can see, the disease is already affecting me," My dad said between a few coughs.

"Of course, I'll ask him for you. Just relax, though. I don't want anything to happen to you. I love you," I replied in the phone.

"I love you too. I need you to stay strong for me, Nicki. Don't cry over me. Make me proud," My dad ended the call.
