The words flew across the room, the icy lament stung everyone, even the witch that casted the forbidden spell.

Rule number one of the Gaecz'e household:

Never ask about business. No one knew why this was the case but everyone had to abide by it.

“Not so great.” Malcolm said “We got into a fight with another company who said we stole plans from them. The company lost and we had to pay them off, so now we're a little low on funds.”

Mason saw where this was going but (against his better judgment) had faith in his father. ‘Even he wouldn't go that far.’

Mason thought to himself.

Carol prodded the conversation ahead. “What! You must have been able to get something out of another deal?”

Mason noticed Malcolm sneer, so he looked away and smelt Malcolm sneer. There was no escape from his smugness anywhere, even the ghosts and dead felt it when he was planning something sinister.

“I would have, but a partnership with the Dickson family was ruined because someone in this family decided to be selfish.”

“MALCOLM DON'T YOU DARE!” Mason screamed but it was ineffective. It was like he wasn't even in the room, there was no shift in motion and no tell of them just ignoring him. It was as if he didn't say anything.

Malcolm clutched his forehead and sighed. “If not for my daughter, we would have a powerful association with tbem by her having his name. But no! She had to be selfish.”

Mason threw back his chair and stood up. “DAD, DON'T DO THIS!”

But it had no effect. Carol just kept acting her role and continued the conversation.

“But how was she selfish? What could she have done?”

Mason was now beside Malcolm with his hand tensed so much it turned pink. “Yeah dad, how was she selfish?”

Malcolm sat up and said, “She decided that the proposal was the best time to let everyone know she was a hom-"
