The prompt for this was "Spoiler alert: We all die in the end." I also used a prompt from Pinterest, below. Enjoy!

Thomas sat and stared out the window at the havoc and carnage being wreaked outside. His friend Joan came up to him and asked, more nonchalantly than expected given what was happening beyond the window, "What do you think's gonna happen?"

Thomas gave a bit of a grin. "Spoiler alert: We all die in the end. And all because of the Sides," he said, spitting the name with such venom, it was clear to tell there was a backstory.

"Wait. You knew them? Personally?" Joan asked.

"I knew all of them," he murmured. "At least, I thought I did. A long time ago."

"What were they like?"

Some crumpled copy of a smile crossed his face. "They were going to change the world."

And around them, the world burned.

One year earlier.

Virgil woke, tiredly rubbing at his eyes as starlight streamed in through the windows. Eyes finally focusing on the room around him, Virgil saw his friends Roman, Logan, Thomas and Patton asleep on the floor and he was reminded of what they were going to attempt to do.

The five of them were superheroes. Virgil controlled water, Roman controlled fire, Logan controlled earth, Thomas controlled lightening and Patton controlled air. And together, they were known as The Sides.

And that night, they were going to take on the villain that went by Deceit. His power? To be able to manipulate anyone and anything, and in extreme cases, to transform into that person or thing. It was a frightening thought, to have your body possessed, and that was why The Sides were going to stop him, once and for all.

As Virgil mulled over these thoughts, his brothers in arms woke up as well. Logan rubbed his eyes, but looked somewhat refreshed. Patton still refused to move from his bed. Thomas stared blankly at the ceiling. And Roman practically sprung out of bed, ready for the adventure.

"My fellow comrades, tonight is the night, we defeat Deceit!" he exclaimed, enunciating the rhyme he had come up with. Virgil rolled his eyes, but the proclamation had been enough to move out of his bed and change.

The plan was to head to Deceit's secret lair which they had gained information about from Patton who's air powers encompassed the ability to pass sound, in which Patton said he had heard Deceit himself mention the location and passed on the information. They were travelling by night, where the darkness would give them enough camouflage to go unnoticed and they were to ambush Deceit. For extra caution, they had purposely leaked information saying they were to be going on the thirtieth, two weeks from now. They only hoped it was enough.

Once The Sides were ready, they stepped outside into the cool night air. Patton was going to be transporting them and as he used their magic to lift them into the air, the wind whipped at their hair.

"Ready?" Thomas called out into the night.

"Let's go," Logan said, with a steely determination. But as soon as they began to move, they were suddenly surrounded on all sides by large birds of prey. The birds formed a tight circle around the superheroes and when Virgil caught sight of their eyes, he was met with a blank stare.

Deceit, he thought, having recognized the look after seeing it many times. But how did he know it was tonight?! And suddenly, the birds attacked. They swarmed at The Sides, and in a panic, they used their magic. Vines, as green as a fresh field, shot into the air entangling one or two of the birds. Strong winds buffeted them about as ropes of fire gleamed against the night. Jets of water shot out, colliding with bright bolts of lightning. And yet, the birds kept attacking. Patton lost focus as one scraped it's talons down his face, and The Sides began to fall. But just before they hit the ground, Patton suddenly regained control and they stopped. The birds flew off. Everything was silent.

    Until Patton spoke.

"There's no use in fighting me," Patton said in a voice that wasn't his own. He looked at Virgil with a hauntingly blank stare and once again, spoke with Deceit's voice. "You will always lose. What's the use? You'll just die. So I'm prepared to give you an offer. Surrender. Surrender to me and help me take on the world, and I'll let you live. Reject my offer and you die. I await your answer in two hours time. You know where to find me." And then Patton's bright gaze was back, Deceit had let him go. Patton directed them to the ground, allowing them to land softly. As their feet touched the ground, no one spoke. No one dared to. They all looked at each other, asking silently. When Logan, Roman, Patton, and Virgil all nodded, Thomas interrupted.

"Woah woah woah WHAT?! You're going to go work for that- that- that snake?! Are you fucking kidding me?" Thomas asked, using a rare curse. "You guys are superheroes! Not villains. What is wrong with you?" The four looked to him with a little pity.

"I'm not just going to die, Thomas. It's simple logic really," Logan explained, a smirk on his face.

"Come on kiddo! We'll get to be together still," Patton said, offering Thomas a hand. Thomas looked at it with disgust.

"No. I would rather die than be evil. If you want to be evil, fine. But being alive, is NOT the same thing as living," Thomas spat. And with a great clap of thunder, he was gone.

Thomas appeared in his house, revolted by his "friends" actions. How could they ever think about joining Deceit?

As he climbed the stairs, he heard screams from outside and saw a flash of fire erupt at his window. With a scream of fury, he tried to summon lightning, knowing that Roman must be up there, somewhere. But as he did, he felt a pain beyond any pain he had felt before. It felt like a part of his soul was being ripped from his body. He staggered back and hit the wall with a thud.

Taking a deep breath, Thomas tried again. And the pain doubled. It felt like a fire was searing across his skin, consuming him. And then it was gone again. Thomas panted, his throat raw. He opened his eyes, when had he closed them?

And then it hit him. The Sides must have convinced Deceit not to kill him. Only to take away his powers. Thomas would never be able to use his magic again.
