Prompt: "Some things are better off forgotten." Hope you enjoy :)

Virgil cleared the dishes off of yet another table to a few half-hearted "thank-you's" from the diners before they returned to their idle chatter. Virgil worked as a waiter at a small café some ten minutes from his house. He worked 9-5 shifts during the day, then worked from 6-11 at night. It was busy, but he needed the money.

His dream, ambition, and only thought that kept him sane, was to go to university and produce music. Unfortunately, his parents were not completely finically stable and
consequently Virgil was forced to work two jobs to make up for university costs.

As he rushed from table to table, topping off people's drinks and taking or serving their meals, he heard the café's bell ring, indicating someone had arrived. Virgil turned and took in the new customer. Dressed in a red button down shirt, black jeans, and a gold belt, Virgil couldn't deny that he was charming.

Virgil what are thinking? You barely have time for friends let alone a boyfriend. Snap out of it!

Virgil heeded his thoughts and quickly continued to serve and take orders. When he got to the new customer's table, he braced himself, but he was nowhere near ready for him.

"Hi, what can I get you?" Virgil asked half-heartedly. The customer turned and Virgil felt the world disappear around him, only focused on him.

His hickory brown hair was styled perfectly giving him a "chill wind-swept" look. His eyes glistened like honey swirling in two pools of melted chocolate.

"-and some orange juice," the dashing customer finished.

"I-I'm really sorry, could you repeat that?"

"Some orange juice I said."

"No, like, t-the whole thing," Virgil stammered out, feeling foolish for not listening and feeling the familiar sense of his anxiety kicking in. But it all disappeared when the customer smiled kindly.

"Sure! I'll have a chicken salad wrap, a side of fries, and some orange juice," he repeated.

"Okay got it. Thank you again."

"Of course," he said with another dazzling smile. Virgil went off to give the chef the order, all the while trying to rid himself of the redness that had taken place on his cheeks.

"Hey Patton. A chicken salad wrap, fries, and OJ for table 7," Virgil rattled off to his coworker and best friend.

"Got it! Coming right up!" Patton called back from inside the kitchens.

Virgil and Patton had been friends since before he could remember, and that friendship was one of the only things that kept him happy every day at work.

Soon enough, the customer finished and when Virgil took back the bill, there was a phone number written in curly handwriting.

"Call me -Roman"

Roman, Virgil thought. It suits him.

The day passed and Virgil and Patton finally locked the last door with satisfaction as they stepped out into the cool night air.

"So, who was that guy at table 7, hmm?" Patton asked, wiggling his eyebrows at Virgil, giving him a playful shove. Virgil's face immediately went red, and he ducked to hide his blush.

"No one!"

"Then why do you still have that receipt?" Virgil's hand flew to his jacket pocket where, true to Patton's word, the receipt could be seen.

"N-no reason."

"Come on Virgil! Just ask him out!" Patton insisted.

"Pat, I barely know him."

"Perfect! You can get to know him on your date!"

"I don't have time for a date. I get an hour's break between my two shifts, when would I have time to go on a date? Just, forget about it."

"Virgil," Patton started, taking Virgil by the shoulders, forcing him to look at him. "I know you want to go to school and produce music, and that there are something's that are better off forgotten, but love is not one of them. So take a chance, and ask him out!"

Virgil paused with his fingers over his phone's keyboard.

Am I really about to text him? Virgil thought. I just met him...

No, he gave you his number for a reason! He clearly expects you to contact him in some way!

Okay.... here I go!

Virgil: Hey Roman. It's Virgil, the waiter from today?

As soon as he hit "send" Virgil regretted sending it, wishing to take it back. He waited staring at the phone for a reply and nearly jumped when the dots appeared, indicating Roman was typing.

Roman: Ah, I was wondering when you would text! Virgil is it? That's a very nice name.

Virgil: Ha ha, thanks.

Virgil and Roman continued to text late into the night, sharing random facts about themselves and talking about their interests. Finally, Virgil decided that then was as good as a time as any.

Virgil: Do you want to go to a movie on Saturday?

Roman: That sounds amazing! I'd love to :)

Virgil: It's a date then.

Roman: It's a date!

Virgil felt butterflies surge in his stomach, but it wasn't a particularly bad feeling.
Patton was right. Some things are better off forgotten, but love is definitely not one of them.

Sorry if this is cringey XD. I wrote it in a hurry, like roughly a half-hour, so sorry! But I hope you enjoyed nonetheless :)
