Chapter 5: Guess

Alice walked to work the next day. Last night's events had not left her with much sleep. She wasn't sure what she was going to find. What she did find was unexpected.

Alice turned the corner stunned. The shop looked like last night's events had not occurred. The dead body was gone, there was no blood, and the glass case was replaced. If Alice had not been there herself, she wouldn't of known anything had happened.

The only evidence that the events had even happened was the lump on Alice's head and the small cuts on her hands.

She pushed the key into the door and closed it behind her. Slowly, Alice cased the room, searching for any little remnants of last night.

The events were seeming like a bad dream rather than reality.

"Looking for something."

Alice turned abruptly to see Griffin sitting the corner. His one leg was casually strewn over his other knee. He was wearing a different suit.

The suit was fresh and it's creases were seamless. His shoes were freshly polished.

Alice did not reply. She nervously let her hand play with the end of her dress. The soft fabric ran smoothly along her fingertips and she tucked her hair behind her ear.

Griffin stood with a grin.

"What are you doing here," Alice said.

Griffin closed the space in between them. He was almost too close for comfort.

"I want to take you somewhere," Griffin said his breath fanning her face.

Alice was hesitant and Griffin could see this.

"You're interested in what I do right?"

She nodded, "It's just that I've been told you are not good company to keep."

Griffin chuckled. It was the first time Alice had heard him make any sort of noise that constituted for happiness.

"Now you don't seem like the type to listen to what other people say. Why start now," He stepped back just far enough to hold out his hand, it was a gesture. And Alice knew, if she took his hand Alice knew there was no turning back.

She looked at his hand and then towards the pastry case. Her mind was blank. She wasn't overrun with pros and cons of the decision she had to make.

With one last look at the counter, Alice took Griffin's hand letting him guide her to a waiting car with a grin.

Sliding into the car Alice felt out of place. Everything was so expensive. Griffin smirked as she marveled at the interior.

"First things first," Griffin said, "we have to get you into something more formal."

"Why-" Alice was cut off by Griffin.

"Don't ask questions. For the rest of the day just go along with it."

Griffin knew Alice was uncomfortable in this situation. He was using this as a test of sorts. He was living in a whole different world than she was.

Griffin liked Alice. He wasn't sure but he really thought she might be the type of girl that would want to be a part of his world.

Could she stomach his world? Would Alice be able to handle the Mafia scene?

It was his world, his livelihood. He hope Alice could be strong enough to live in his world. Well one of them at least.

They stopped only for a moment to pick up a dress. Alice assumed it was for her.

"Put this on," Griffin handed her the tight red cocktail dress.

Alice held the dress, feeling the expensive material,"Wait you mean here."

Griffin nodded.

"In front of you," Alice added seeming very unsure about this new request.

Griffin nodded once more.

Making an indignant huff Alice turned her back towards him,"At least turn around. Just because you saved my life and you have a fancy car doesn't mean you can have a free show."

Griffin chuckled,"Fine. Fine, I have to check my email anyways."

He pulled his phone from the inside pocket of his jacket. Alice peaked over her shoulder to make sure he wasn't looking while she undressed as quickly as possible.

Griffin's head was bent as he focused in on his phone. He let his eyes flicker to her bare back for a moment then forced them to settle back on his phone screen.

"Okay. I am done," Alice stated turning back towards Griffin.

Alice wiggled slightly in her seat as she pulled the tight dress further down her thigh. Griffin was looking at her with a hit of lust in his eyes. He quickly masked it.

Slipping his phone back into his jacket, Griffin smiled,"Good because we are here

Slipping his phone back into his jacket, Griffin smiled,"Good because we are here."

Handing Alice a pair of heels, he watched as she skillfully slip them on before opening the car door.

Griffin stood outside the door and held his hand out to Alice. She took it gratefully.

As she stood up and out of the car she noticed they were at a banquet type event. There were couples walking around in fancy cocktail dresses much like hers. The car drove off and Griffin settled his hand on Alice's lower back.

Alice went to push it off but Griffin leaned down whispering into her hair, "You are my date. We don't want people getting the wrong idea. Now, do we?"

With a slight shake of her head, Alice let Griffin's hand back down. His cold hand was on her bareback which made her shiver. The dress had a low back that hung gracefully above her back dimples.

Alice looked up at Griffin. He was looking straight ahead at the party inside the building. Alice followed his gaze.

People mingled and were seeming to be having a good time. Even though everyone smiles were a bit too broad and their postures a bit too straight.

Alice could tell many people were faking this happy atmosphere.

"Are you ready," Griffin said as he watched her take it all in.

Alice nestled her hand into the crook of Griffin outstretched arm, "Yes."

The two stepped into the banquet.
