Chapter 3

I was still trying to absorb the words that came out from Saleo's larynx. "Could you kill me a Dragon?"

He repeated, "The Island of Depreakap is cursed by the presence of a Dragon called Nograd. Bring him down"

I didn't know how to react. He is asking me to slay a dragon? I HAVE TO SLAY A DRAGON ?? But I knew I had to be confident so as to win Saleo's trust. So I reacted in a rather casual way as if it were quite normal to slay dragons now and then.

"Yes. Totally. So where is the dragon?"

"No one knows for sure. Rumour has it he is still in the dungeon adjoining Meydane.  The last time it was Sir Zain Fortunato who attempted to defeat him. Too fortunate to be alive he is"

And that luck clearly wont apply to everyone to attempts the task. This was clearly me giving an open invitation to death. But since there is no other option, I have to step up. I could see worry on Mruango's face too. But what could he do?

But there was something again that I did not understand. What could be the possible relation between sailors and dragons?

So I took it over to Saleo "What would you get by having this dragon killed, or do you merely see pleasure in getting me killed?"

The latter wasn't intented to be spoken, nervousness does these things at times. I looked anxiously towards Saleo for a reaction as he took a moment.

"Most of my trades are affiliated to Depreakap and Port Kaneno. My profits are highly minimized due to customs and a lot of restrictions are levied on my cargo. This Island is ruled by the Deprekapian royal family, which is indeed a mockery to itself. Everyone knows that you can't rule an Island which a Dragon already rules over. In complete agony, they have offered endless reward for anyone who slays the dragon, including exemption of taxes and custom duties. And of course, a lot of dignity. That way I can manage all the expenses to Meherock and back. "

He winked, "Its a fair deal, you kill the dragon and I claim the rewards."

"Only if I'm alive...," I said to myself.

Mruango looked speechless knowing the deal proposed wasn't fair in anyway. He was trying to figure out another way, a way that didn't involve me getting killed.

Amongst this plan, there was a loud whistle which indicated the ship was about to sail. Saleo had to leave and he wished me good luck. "I'll be back in a week. I hope you kill the dragon, and then we can leave for Meherock."

He shook hands with Mruango who was clueless the whole time"

"Relax mate, if he is anyway related to Meherock, he is most likely to succeed"

Mruango couldn't do anything but nod. Saleo walked towards the ship till he disappeared from our sight.

We walked our way back to Daynor as I gave a thought to everything Saleo said. I tried to think in an optimistic way... But wait, there was probably no positive aspect of what was happening here. Maybe if I tasted pathetic, there is a possibility he'd puke me out. I dont even recall agreeing to the task I was forced into. But I didnt deny either..

''We have no other way to Mehrock,'' said Mruango, ''You kill the dragon or not, you claim the rewards for yourself or not, Saleo is the lone experienced sailor in the whole of Depreakap.

"So Mruango," I said. "Where is this Fortunato guy?"

"You mean to say Sir Zain Fortunato. Sir lives just a 10 minute walk away from the town bank, the red bricked building we spoke about on our way."
