chapter 3
It's been about a month since my 16th birthday, and In that time I had probably spent more time as a dragon rather than a human. The feeling of flying was breathtaking, and everytime I took flight I felt distant but never lonely. I felt closer to my mother, wherever she was.
Vulpine was on my back this time, she had learned to enjoy flying with me after my first co-flying experience with her which ended up with us both in a lake, and just like many felines, Vulpine doesnt like water.
Hold on tight, I laughed into her thoughts. Her claws stuck into my scales but it no longer bothered me. The clouds tickled my ears but the view was breathtaking, like the sky was made up of glistening oranges.
I pulled my wings to my body and angled myself face down, gaining speed I shot down out of the sky, eyes closed but it seemed like my soul had awaken from a deep slumber, I felt alive.
Something didnt feel right, I opened my eyes and saw fire. And the way Vulpines body tensed, I knew she saw it too.
I don't think it is safe to go there, by her tone I knew that she knew of my motives.
Panic swelled inside of me as realization hit me like a hard force. Thats where the cabin is.
The tips of my wings extended slightly as I changed direction. When I neared my flight spot I extended my wings and swooped down to land. I quickly shifted into my human form, over the month I have perfected this technique, and slipped on my shirt and pants that I had layed out earlier for my return. With Vulpine at my heels, I sprinted with all my might to the cabin. Vulpine jumped ahead of me to stop me
Get into that tree now!, she screamed into my head. I looked ahead and couldnt see what she saw but the panic in her voice alarmed me. I grabbed onto a tree branch and jumped up. I arched my neck to get a better look. My heart dropped when I saw the kings guards holding swords and torches.
"Bring them to me!" yelled a guard with blonde hair. He had his helmet off so I saw his face. Pale, but chiseled features glistened from the fire. He was about my age which was strange but I no longer payed attention to it. I narrowed my eyes and saw 2 fully Armoured guards throw to figures on the ground before pulling off the sacks on their heads. My heart dropped, tears started burning in my eyes, my hands gripped the tree even harder.
It was Grams and Grandpa.
My shoulders tensed as I saw them get on their knees.
"Where is the dragon?!" asked the blonde guard.
My eyes widened, I thought no one knew about me, I had tried so hard to keep my self out of anyones view but it wasn't good enough.
"We will not tell you!" yelled Grams at the top of her lungs. Grandpa nodded in agreement.
"Very well then" the blonde guard raised his sword. I launched forward but Vulpine was quicker, she put her paw on my forehead and froze. I couldnt move. I watched in horror as the guard brought down his sword upon Grams, slashing her on the shoulder then violently dragging the sword across her neck. Time seemed to have slowed down, Grandpa screamed in horror as he grabbed for grams, but a sword cut right through him. Grams fell limply on top of Grams. I opened my mouth to scream in agony but nothing came out.
My vision blurred with all my tears. My heart ached with anger and dispair. I felt my arm move to my will, Vulpine cant control me anymore.
Anger swelled up inside me and burned with ferocity. I screamed with all my might and shifted. My scream turned into a loud rour and the guards stared at me in horror. My body was engulfed in flames, and my mouth hung open as my eyes traveled across them all.
"Kill it!!" I heard a guard yell. I turned my head in the direction and from all the anger inside me I released a scorching flame in all directions and at every guard. I leaped over Grams and Grandpa to guard their lifeless bodies and screeched at the guards who had avoided my flame of wrath. I felt a sword dig into my side and quickly flicked my tail around amd sent 5 guards into the burning cabin. Their screams of pain filled the air.
There was only one left, the blonde guard. My eyes pierced him as I inched toward him. Fire surrounded us and he had no where to go. Fear shook in his eyes as he gripped his sword, still drenched in the blood of the people who raised me, who loved me, and who he stole from me. I launched forward to rip him with my teeth when a tree fell and trapped him under its branches. He shook frantically but all efforts were useless, he was stuck. He was my prey and I was the predator. He fell limp with exhaustion.
Dont, pleaded Vulpine, Do not become a monster.
A monster? I laughed at the thought, couldnt she see I was one?
But I did not want to disappoint Vulpine so I let him suffer under that tree.
I shifted forms, and knelt down by Grams and Grandpa. I layed them carefully sighed by side and intertwined their fingers together as if they died holding hands. I moved grams hair out of her face. Blood drenched them both.
Many people say that when you die you look peaceful, but the only thing she saw on their face was horror, the last thing they felt before dying. I rested myself next to them and cried, fire crackling around us, but I just let my sadness consume me. Vulpine rested her head on my shoulder. I felt so alone. I have Vulpine and my mom some where but without Grams and Grandpa I felt destroyed, it felt like the life in me had worn out.
I cried with a loud dispair for what felt like hours, rain started falling and the fire died out. My hair clung to my body and hands were stained red.
I turned to the trapped guard and he jerked with fear.
"Stop please dont hurt me" he pleaded.
" How did you know about me? How did you find me?!" I asked. My voice was hoarse.
" The... the king... he said there's a dragon in the forest that lives in a cabin, but no one believed him until he put a hefty reward out to whoever found you and so we went blindly into the forest and felt like we were looking for a ghost until we saw the cabin and saw you flying above" he sniffled, "we only did this to protect the kingdom. "
"No, you did it for money" I glared at him.
"I will take you to him, I swear I will" the guard pleaded. Vulpine was silent as ever.
"How did the king know about me?" I sneered at him.
There was silence until the guard said " The King was visited...by another dragon."
