Dragon's Heart

Chapter 8

Leilas p.o.v.

        After getting escorted into a hut, I flopped onto a bed and Vulpine laid next to my. Kyron, who had been strangely quiet this day, was leaning on the wall and sighed.

         "Spit it out" I sneered, " Whats bothering you?" I pushed myself up with my elbow and looked at him. I had not warmed up to him at all, and most definantly havent forgiven him for what he did to Grams and Grandpa. 

        "Nothing, just kind of thinking about how this place hasnt been discovered by the royal army yet" he smirked. Vulpine scoffed and sat up. 

        "We can't let him tell the king about this place, he has no goodness in his heart and he is loyal to the king only" Vulpine reminded me. I gave her a nod and layed back down, rest was the only thing I had in mind. 

         " Best get some sleep, we have a long day tomorrow" Kyron whispered. I guess I was too tired to look into what he said because I dozed off as soon as I closed my eyes. In my dreams, fire was burning everywhere and dragons were falling one at a time then all at once. I tried moving but I couldnt, and my screams were caught in my throat. Smoke started to cover me and I couldnt see more than a foot in front of me. Then out of the smoke appeared red eyes and it felt like they bore into my soul. The red was like no other, it was like looking into a nightmare. The smoke soon solidified and it was a black dragon who was curled around me. I stared up at it in horror as I soon realized who it was. But in that instance he stretched out his neck and brought down upon me a fiery hot Flame that engulfed me. I felt it burning at my skin and heard someone scream my name. My eyes shot open and I saw Vulpine.

    I let out a sigh and relaxed for a split second then what I saw made me relive a horror again. Our hut was on fire, and coming down on us. I leaped up looked around to take it all in, Clouds of smoke were escaping the windows and Kyron burst out the door. Vulpine and I quickly followed and leaped down the steps. Huts all around me were on fire and the tree folk were running around in panic. I looked up and saw a giant hole above the cavern and knights were throwing down ropes and climbing down. My eyes shot to the Center big tree and saw the Wise old tree escorting people down an escape route. I hurried my way over with Vulpine on my heels. 
        

        " What is happening?!" I screamed in a panic. Worry was written on his face as he looked at me.

        " I dont know how they found us but we must get everyone out of here" He said with hurry. The young children were running down the steps and were followed by their families. " That should be everyone, Leila you must get out of here and escape before its too late, I must stay and close this" He reached for a lever but I stopped him.

        "No, I will hold them off, you go " I reassured him, his eyes slowly softened but he closed them and nodded. I turned to vulpine " you go too, I can't keep us both safe and I cant bear to lose you too" Knights had reached the floor level and were searching the burning village.

        "I cant leave you" Vulpine pleaded. The old tree scooped her up quickly and wobbled down the stairs to the escape route. All I could hear was Vulpine cry out as it started to fade. I pulled the lever and a rock blocked the passage and a path of grass crawled on top of it to camoflauge what it once was.

        I turned and saw Kyron waving over the knights. My eyes burned with tears and anger as I hunched up my shoulders and transformed into a dragon. The knights stopped for a moment then charged at me. I straightened out my back and could feel that I have grown as a dragon, I was as tall as trees now. I saw that Kyron made his way back to his group and anger was fueling me. I let out a hot flame and it ate the grass beneath it and stopped the knights in their tracks. I Charged through the fire and knocked them back into huts who were crumbling down, Screams filled my ears as I continued to slash at the army. A knight came running with his sword blazed high, I quickly whacked him with my tail but as I did so, an arrow shot into my shoulder. I winced in pain for a moment then Breathed out fire into that direction. I looked to my right and a tranquilizing arrow shot me in my neck.            I froze and let out a small puff of fire before my vision blurred and I collapsed. I groaned against the floor as a pair of black leather boots walked in front of my face. I slowly looked up and saw a man with fire red hair looking down on me. My eyes drooped closed and all I could hear was a faint " Sack her and bring her to the dungeon, lets give Zara some company" and then I was out.

        I awoke to the sound of chains rattling, my head pounded violently as I opened my eyes. I was clothed in a simple white gown that was dirty from the ground I was on. I blinked a few times before looking up, realizing it was night time I squinted to get a better look around. I saw a figure curled up across from me, and she was staring right at me.

        "who..." I started but then it hit me as my eyes suddenly took in all her features as the moonlight slowly illuminated her. Long dark hair, Bright sapphire eyes. My voice was stuck in my throat as I seemed to have swallowed a whole 16 years of emotion, my eyes started stinging as she soon came to realize who I was and gave me a weak smile as tears fell down her face.

        The only thing I could muster out of my mouth was " mom".
