We wander the halls of the hospital, trying to find Mason. We've looked almost everywhere and I'm starting to think that he left the hospital. Then I see him, huddled in a corner, his head between his knees, shaking.
I walk over to him and place my hand on his knee. "Mason," I whisper, "she'll be fine."
He shrugs and turns to face away from me.
"but," I continue, "we'll never find out if we don't stay in the waiting room."
I grab his hand and help him into standing position.
We walk silently back to the ICU waiting room, hoping that there'll be news about Matilda.
All four of us sit in the waiting room. No nurse has come to give us news yet. Mason is definitely nervous.
"Hello. Family of Matilda, we have news for you," a nurse says stepping into the room.
Immediately, we all stand up.
"We managed to get her heart working again, but she is, once again, unconscious."
I turn and hug Mason knowing how mixed his emotions probably are. At least Matilda is alive.
All four of us leave the hospital because it's gotten late and I know I'll function better if I sleep at home.
I hope that Matilda makes it; she truly saved me when I was orphaned. The doctors know what they're doing...
