Usually, on a regular Sunday under regular circumstances, the Neals and the McLaughlins would ride to church together. But, under abnormal circumstances like the one that was taking place, the families didn't go. Instead, this Sunday the families did their own separate bible studies in their houses. They didn't want to go to church because they'd get a lot of questions about why their husbands and dads weren't with them. These were questions that the two families couldn't answer, and didn't want to answer.* * *
It was now 12:00 on a Sunday afternoon. But the boys didn't know that. They hadn't eaten since they arrived in the pitch black room; so almost a week had gone by since they had seen even a sign of food... but they didn't long for it. They didn't hunger. The light in the middle of the ceiling had burnt out the day before, so they were left in darkness once again.
Rhett had woken up on Saturday night. He had slept though the whole day. But to him, it seemed like he only got a couple of hours in. The pain in Rhett's broken wrist had subsided a little, but every time he moved it, it felt like he had broken it all over again.Link kept slipping into reality and back out of it. He'd be on planet earth for a few seconds to a few minutes, and then he'd fall limp and go into space again for a while. When he would regain consciousness for a minute or two, he would sit up and say things like "Ooh, Rhett! I can smell colors... I smell... um... black! Is it black in here? I think it's purple. I can't see anything... yep, it's definitely purple". Once, he even asked Rhett to recite the ABCs forwards and backwards. Rhett had done it only because Link had asked him again and again every time he refused to do it. It had gotten obnoxious. Link's head wound had dried blood all over and around it. There was a huge gash on his temple, too.
Rhett had gotten used to these random and concerning comments. Even so, something was seriously wrong with his best friend. But on Sunday morning, Link came to himself once again, and for the minute that he had his eyes open, he said something that had brought back memories to Rhett's mind.
Link opened his eyes. "H-hold on, I-I'm just coming to. Evidently I've hurt my left hip". Rhett's eyes widened. Did he really just say that? "Hmm. It's like college all over again." He murmured.
